Tea tastes better out a certain mug

I have numerous lovely mugs but for some reason my tea tastes the best out of a particular mug.

No other mug comes close to how good my tea tastes from the one and for the life of me I can not understand why!

Can anyone give a scientific answer or is it just because.

I also hate any cups where the rims are too thick, never have a Costa drink...

Bone china seems to keep the tea nice and hot. Thicker mugs don't seem to ... probably just me ?

It's probably just that a thick mug is simply has more material so it cools the tea more to begin with.

DH keeps sneaking glass mugs into the kitchen cupboards. Tea tastes wrong from one of those! He thinks I'm crazy so I'm glad someone else thinks mugs make a difference.

Must be white inside and must be one of the ones that is a sort of triangular shape, wider at the top than the bottom. I can drink out of glass mugs, I can’t drink tea from a skinny bone china mug or a thick mug

I have a blue denby mug that I use for tea and coffee, it’s followed me through three workplaces and is the one I use constantly. I may have bought three when I saw they were being discontinued just in case of breakages.

Prefer a bone china cup for tea ...unless I'm outside doing some gardening, then it has to be a thick handled mug.

I bought a lovely mug for work its so pretty but I cant get the brew right. I've come to the conclusion it's its shape that's the problem. If I leave the bag in the normal amount of time the tea hasn't brewed enough but leaving it until the colour is right still doesn't work it tastes 'stewed' (as my Gran would say). It's smaller at the bottom then the top but it's short and wider then average at the top.

It's such a shame it's just so pretty.

My favoured tea mug is the long mourned Cath Kidston crush mug. I scour ebay for them and pay daft prices but it is the perfect design

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 19/01/2024 21:20

I have specific receptacles for specific drinks, and nothing else will do!

Hmm, I have a Habitat mug that's the opposite. It has a larger base and then gets narrower on the way up. Keeps your tea hotter for longer!

TheDandyLion · 19/01/2024 21:29

Black tea must be in bone china and green tea must be in glass.

Ifailed · 19/01/2024 21:30

All a load of nonsense.

CatamaranViper · 19/01/2024 21:31

I have a set of mugs, all the same size, shape and pattern but all different colours. I can only have tea in the purple ones. Coffee in the red

buckleten · 19/01/2024 21:31

Tea tastes best in a bone china mug, which is white in the inside for some reason!

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 19/01/2024 21:36

I know what you mean my tea mug is china and the right shape/ thickness. I feel like Goldilocks but I’ve tried lots of mugs and this one makes me happy.

OctopusRule · 19/01/2024 21:43

My people…

Im extremely fussy about my mugs for tea. like someone said up thread I have my ‘first drink of the day’ mug. My mid morning mug and the. A couple I got to for the evening.

There are mugs my husband has that I refuse to drink out of!!!

Jeannie88 · 19/01/2024 21:46

Coffee for me and yes I agree. At work not the same drinking out of a covered thermos flask one or even a starbucks paper cup. Like wine, wine glass, beer a designated one lol 😆

maimeo · 19/01/2024 21:47

Full cupboard of mismatched mugs in this house. DH and I both have several favourites, thankfully none in common! Also there are certain ones I refuse to drink from.... my absolute favourite is a navy Gluwein mug bought at Christmas market in Vienna containing mulled wine!! My tea from it tastes nearly as good as that originally did.

DoughnutB · 19/01/2024 21:58

While some aspects, like the material and shape of the mug, have a scientific basis, others, such as personal associations are more subjective. In essence, the "best" mug for your tea might be a combination of sensory, psychological, and personal factors that collectively enhance your overall tea-drinking experience with that particular mug.

RedRobyn2021 · 19/01/2024 21:59

Is it fine bone China?

Clingfilm · 19/01/2024 22:01

Amen! I could be gasping with a banging headache and I don't think I could accept a cup of tea out of a see through cup or a 70s brown mug, especially those Hornsea ones, vom.

NisekoWhistler · 19/01/2024 22:10

Fine bone china makes all the difference, I can't drink tea out of anything else. Yes I'm fully aware what a princess this makes me!

WhatICallMyUsername · 19/01/2024 22:48

I don't mind my morning tea in a normal mug but for some reason my tea after lunch (so afternoon tea I guess!) has to be in a bone china mug and I've recently broken both and am waiting for my birthday to have nice tea again

stayathomer · 19/01/2024 22:51

I don’t like it out of bone china mugs!!! My favourite cup is over in mils and is really special to her and I just want to take it home!!!

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 19/01/2024 23:43

I collect Emma Bridgewater pottery. Most of my mugs are EB. They’re brilliant because they cool the tea down quite quickly so you can neck it without it boiling your throat. And they’re very pretty. And I have matching tea plates. It’s quite satisfying.
