Neighbours wood burner fumes

Currently my home smells smoky due my next door neighbours wood burner. We live in 1980s houses without chimneys so when she had it installed, they had to fit this industrial looking metal chimney to the side of her house. Depending on what way the wind blows, more often than not it blows the smoke over my house and the smell gets in. I'm worried that it could harm us? She burns any old crap she can find. I had a skip recently and she took some pallets out of it to burn. Can I get the air in my home tested? I'm not sure what do. I don't object to the wood burner as such but I'm concerned about what my family may be breathing in.

They are foul and should be banned.

Probably is harmful to breath in, especially if she's using old palettes, they're coated in something, can't remember the name but it's toxic.
I do love a wood burning fire though, when burning actual good quality wood they smell amazing, our home often smells due to many properties on our street using them and I love the smell, it's so cosy.
You can report to environmental health if you think she's using illegal fuels.

Can you ask the council or someone about regulation for chimney because they have to be a certain height and clearance etc

You can get home air quality tests done with companies like this...

And hopefully that should give you some options for what to do next. I love a good log burner but they're one of the worst contributors of harmful particles in the house, especially to children, so I can't have one out of principle :(

Report it to environmental health at your local council. There were additional regulations brought in not that long ago about emissions from log burners, so she could well be acting illegally. They should investigate it.

We used to have no end of trouble with a house near us burning all sorts of random crap, and stinking smoke wafting everywhere, but they must have got their act together after this new law, because we've not had an issue so far this winter.
