Contact lenses

Would you recommend contact lenses?

I use glasses for reading but I've noticed my eyes are getting worse and need my glasses a lot more.
I'm thinking of trying contact lenses but worrying about forgetting I've got them in and falling asleep. I read in bed.

So do you use them and do you recommend?

I wear daily disposable ones when I'm going out somewhere nice on playing sport. Also.in the summer when so I can wear my non prescription sunnies. I get them through Boots which gives me 50% off my glasses. There are different brands and I did have to switch at one point. I think mine are Acuvue now.

Google multifocal contact lenses. Take them out when you brush your teeth before you hop into bed and wear your reading specs then, so you don't need to get up again before you nod off. Look up Alcon Total 1 multifocal. This brand are the best I've ever tried. So comfortable.

Many of the lenses on the market now are silicon based, which means that it doesn't matter so much if you fall asleep in them occasionally, but you'll get into a routine.

I'm an optometrist and just moved to contact lens wear myself for part-time wear - for a few reasons they don't work for me at work. But for everything outside work they're great.

The Alcon brand the poster above recommended are good and I also like to acuvue multifocals, but when you go for your contact lens fitting, the optician will advise the best lenses for you. The fitting process isn't as straightforward as with normal lenses, so they'll often need a tweek. For most people, they're not quite as clear as glasses, but you get the benefit of the all around vision.

I used to wear them. I've had both hard and soft and both irritated the hell out of them for most of the year. I have hay fever and get very sore eyes. If you don't get anything like that I'd recommend them.

I couldn’t be without my contact lenses. However I’d take them out before I got into bed and still use glasses to read in bed.

You won’t forget, you just get into a routine - brush teeth, do lenses.

And they can actually be slept in so it’s not a big deal if you accidentally did. I don’t recommend it, you’ll wake up with really dry eyes but its not a problem. I would sleep in my lenses for a nap.

I’d start by seeing your optician and discussing it with them - you might need varifocal lenses. Or lenses and reading glasses. They’ll be able to recommend the right kind.

I have used contact lenses for 35 years. I switched to them as I have a high script which means I need glasses all the time, but it meant my glasses lenses were heavy and always slipping down. I had always been told I couldn't wear contact lenses as I have astigmatism. But I used a new optician after moving home and they suggested toric lenses, which had never been mentioned to me before. Toric are specially shaped to fit my rugby ball shaped corneas. They took a bit of getting used to, and perfecting the knack of taking them out and putting them in took patience, but the experience was quite liberating in all. I have rigid gas permeable lenses that are replaced around every 18 month. This is because for me and my prescription it works out cheaper than monthly or daily lenses. You are not supposed to sleep in contact lenses but if you forgot, or it was a one off incident you would be fine - they just feel less comfy when you wake up, and regularly doing this can cause infections and ulcers and the likes. I have worn soft lenses but personally found they dry out quickly if I use screens a lot. The down side of gas permeable would be that if you get something in your eye it can feel like you have a boulder in there, and you have to take the lens out for a quick clean. You can buy the branded and more expensive cleaners from an optician or pharmacy, but I use a supermarket own brand which is much cheaper, bad doesn't appear to affect the life of comfort of the lenses. I have monthly disposables that you can wear overnight. I got them as i used to work evening and get home at 1-2am and just fall into bed without taking my lenses out. I also find them really good when camping etc as dont have to worry about keeping them clean etc.

Mairzydotes · 19/01/2024 10:08

Speak to your optician and give them a try . I wear my contacts occasionally, but I get much clearer visibility out of my glasses as they are able make the lenses more precise on glasses.

I have worn contacts for years. You get better vision (especially peripheral) than with glasses. You do need to look after them, but I've always been very happy with mine. I wear rigid gas permeable ones, which are harder to start with but good for your eyes. I can't get on with soft or disposables sadly as they would be handy sometimes!

Bluevelvetsofa · 19/01/2024 10:13

I wore them for years and generally, took them out when I got home from work, so no chance of forgetting and leaving them in,

gerteddy · 19/01/2024 14:03

Contacts are amazing! Get daily disposables they are much better. I used to have monthly ones and do the solution at night thing. A brand new pair everyday is fab, crystal clear and more hygienic.

The ones I have you can sleep with in. I don't though in prescribed them as they have more moisture in them and my eyes get quite dry with contacts. If you do fall asleep (as I've done a gd few times) you just take them out. Your eyes might be a little sore but no damage.

I can recommend specsavers. Been with them for years now. I pay £18 per month I think that's enough for 4 pairs a week or something. I don't wear them everyday I do still wear glasses sometimes due to my dry eye issue.

FreyaFromTheFens · 19/01/2024 14:15

I've worn contacts for over 10 years and use the Accuvue hydraclear ones that can be worn continuously for a week.
I don't have to worry about taking them out every night and my eyes never feel dry or sticky.
I couldn't be arsed with daily ones though!
