Have you seen Jupiter tonight?

Lovely view. Look at the moon and at about 7pm from it, you will see a bright light - and apparently that's Jupiter.

11 times the size of Earth and about 558 million miles away!!

I saw it and wondered if it was a planet as it was so bright. I was intending to Google it when I got home, but got distracted, so thanks for letting me know.

Morningfog85 · 18/01/2024 21:57

I saw it earlier, about 5pm, just as the sky was darkening... It looked amazing next to the moon! I assumed it was Jupiter, and meant to check - so glad you posted about it!

calexico · 18/01/2024 21:58

Also saw that earlier and was wondering what is was. Thanks!

Gingernaut · 18/01/2024 21:58

I saw a very bright, unmoving star just by the waxing moon

Thought it might be a planet, as the star isn't normally there.

Didn't know it was Jupiter.

ThePoshUns · 18/01/2024 21:59

Yes!

Dougt · 18/01/2024 22:01

Thanks! Saw it on my way home from work and wondered which planet it was.

Chimchar · 18/01/2024 22:04

Ahhh. I saw it too and knew it was a planet but didn't know which one!

DillDanding · 18/01/2024 22:04

Yes, I saw it at about 5pm.

Starabella · 18/01/2024 22:04

Yes I saw it too. We live rurally and I often find myself staring up at the night sky. It caught my attention as it was so bright and the sky wasn't even dark yet. Really wish I had a telescope!

Me too, exactly the same thought process and distraction!

It was really bright.

Naptrappedmummy · 18/01/2024 22:06

Yes I saw it! I stood on the road for a while just staring, I thought it was a shooting star so was waiting for it to break up and disappear. DD is really into space at the moment, gutted I didn’t realise and show it to her. Will it be back tomorrow at the risk of sounding very amateur?

JanglyBeads · 18/01/2024 22:07

Oh yes! Thanks for posting this OP

BearSoFair · 18/01/2024 22:08

Yes and DSes had the telescope out in the garden, just enough magnification with a new eyepiece to see the banding! Worth standing out in the cold for

NewName24 · 18/01/2024 22:09

Thanks for posting OP.
I saw it when out earlier, and was wondering what it was.

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 18/01/2024 22:09

Yes!

I’ve got the Star Walk 2 app on my phone - really good for identifying planets etc.

Theimpossiblegirl · 18/01/2024 22:10

Just took the dog for an extra late wee to have a look. Beautiful.

NahHumBrag · 18/01/2024 22:11

Y’all need to download the SkyView app - shows you all the stars and planets. Been watching Jupiter all week - it’s amazing!

This is probably well known but generally, if it twinkles, it’s a star. If it’s a solid bright light: planet.

edit: apologies @EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel didn’t see your recommendation.

BearSoFair · 18/01/2024 22:12

@Naptrappedmummy it won't be so close to the moon tomorrow but it'll be visible for at least the rest of Jan and probably Feb. It was at it's closest in November.

wheo · 18/01/2024 22:14

Just looked out my window and saw it!! Thanks OP 🤩

😲

So cool that you can see the bands!

I thought twinkling was just the light refracting through the earths atmosphere, why does it do this for stars but not planets? 🤔

Thanks! Will give it another try tomorrow

ButteryBiscuitBaseBiscuitBase · 18/01/2024 22:17

Yea I saw it too. I have a star tracker app and it confirmed it was Jupiter. I've just been out now and to the left of that is Orion, whose belt points directly down to Sirius, the dog star, the brightest star in the sky.

Sahara123 · 18/01/2024 22:21

I see it ! Wow it’s a clear night here , so cold but very beautiful

NewYearNameChanger · 18/01/2024 22:23

I saw it and assumed it was Venus as it was so bright, but checked my stellarium app and saw it was Jupiter. If felt really auspicious somehow :)
