Do you switch boiler off before engineer's visit (to cool down).

I've always switched our boiler off before an engineer's visit to allow it to cool down, bearing in mind they have to open it up, empty containers, clean.

Does anyone else do this or just leave it running? I don't know if it's necessary and only reason I'm asking if what he's due here in an hour and boiler is still running to come up to temperature (reduced it to 17.5c) where it's so cold outside.

We don't have the heating on the day of the boiler service until he's gone just incase as they have to go right inside it like you say and break it down if there's parts that need extra work. I don't know if it's anything official but given a lot of it is metal it seems a good idea so he doesn't burn himself.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking. I've switched it off.

We haven't got it set on high anyway, but it just still so cold outside my nose and hands are cold where house is struggling to come up to temperature. Hopefully cleaning the bathroom and having a cuppa in the meantime will help!

I've never ever even considered that as a thing to do. It's never stopped a service happening so I presume it's not a requirement.

I would only do that if he asked me to beforehand. He did once, as far as I remember he was going to have to freeze pipes, so needed them to be cool beforehand. But every other occasion, no - certainly not for the routine annual service.

We have never done that or even thought to do it, there had never been an issue and they have never asked us to do it. I thought they would need to see it running anyway.

Yep always turn the heating off before they come

RichardMarxisinnocent · 18/01/2024 10:30

Never done it, never been asked to do it, it would never have occurred to me to do it, and services have always gone ahead regardless of whether the boiler has been on or not.

I always switch the boiler off for 2 hours before the service

The engineer said 'so grateful, very many people don't do that'

I said ' do the booking people ask customers to switch off their boilers before a visit?' [As I wasn't asked to, I just did it]

And the engineer said no 🤣
