I sat in car for 40 mins with radio on and battery died. Breakdown company wanted to charge me £182 as they say it was self-inflicted!

I suppose it was but I didn't expect my battery to die after such a short time.
My previous car, I could have had the radio on for hours and it wouldn't have gone flat.

Anyway I managed to get a jump start from a kind person parked alongside me.

Moral of the story
A. Keep a set of jump leads in the car in winter time.
B. If your battery dies and you phone the breakdown company, don't admit to having the radio on!

It depends what sort of journeys you have recently done. It can take a longer trip to recharge fully. Lots of short trips with heaters etc may deplete it more quickly. Did they replace the battery?

C dont sit in the car for 40 minutes listening to the radio

I didn't use them as I got a jump start from a person parked near me.

Why were you sat there for 40 mins with the radio on? Not the point, I appreciate. But!

Yes I did say it was probably my fault but I hope you enjoyed getting your dig in.

If you are using your car for short journeys in winter it can really drain your battery - lights, radio, heater, de-misting your windows all take a huge amount off the battery, and if you aren't compensating with long drives, it doesn't take much to drain it.

I’ve done that too OP, don’t worry!

I got my DP out of it, though - he’s the one who came to my rescue and we’ve been together ever since 😄

When batteries get nearer the end of their life it doesn't take much to drain them. I'm also not sure they do so well in very cold weather from previous experience so unless it's a brand new car then I'd chalk it up to one of those things and maybe invest in a new battery if it keeps happening.

TheDandyLion · 17/01/2024 22:00

I'm not surprised it drained. Car batteries are only designed to give a high charge for a short amount of time just to get the car started before they charge back up again once the engine has been running. The cold weather wouldn't have helped either.
