Waking up at 3am every single night! What can I do?

Gogoyoyo · 17/01/2024 21:01

On day 6 of waking up at 3am every single night, not just waking up then falling back to sleep, but I am properly awake and could get up and start the day! Life is busy, I have 3 Primary aged DCs, 2 part time jobs and a DH that works away a lot. So short of it, I am seriously knackered and really need the sleep! I go to bed between 10-11, DCs wake up at 6.
I'm at a total loss about what to do as there's no explanation behind it!
Probably going to sound a bit silly here, but I keep thinking that it's a premonition and something bad will happen at that time soon - ridiculous I know!
Any tips / advice welcome..

Don’t open your eyes. Just rest if needs be. No getting up for a wee / thinking about things.

Janek · 17/01/2024 21:19

Take magnesium every day!

WolfFoxHare · 17/01/2024 21:20

Never ever check the clock if you wake up at night.

Let my fucking cat out

Thisisthedawningoftheageofaquarius · 17/01/2024 21:24

No caffeine at all after 2pm
dont go on the internet
listen to a podcast or boring audiobook
take magnesium before bed
make sure you’re getting daylight every day
oh and be consistent in your rising/bed times
Hopefully that helps- I had it for a while and it’s a nightmare but You’ll get thru it

FatherJoseFernandez · 17/01/2024 21:28

I am exactly the same! (although mine is probably more to do with peri menopause) I find I wake up needing a wee then can’t get back to sleep as I start thinking about things that subsequently stress me out. DH’s snoring doesn’t help either! Magnesium has definitely helped as have ear plugs! If my mind starts drifting off and thinking about anything that worries me I try to bring it back to my fail safe day dream of winning the lottery and what I’d spend the money on!

BambooWhoosh · 17/01/2024 21:30

Anything sweet during the evening disrupts my sleep. Think it puts me on a sugar rollercoaster.

menopausalmare · 17/01/2024 21:33

Are you approaching menopause?

Gymmum82 · 17/01/2024 21:35

Likely perimenopause. That was my first symptom and started about age 38/39 and got progressively worse since then. I haven’t found a solution

Gogoyoyo · 17/01/2024 21:36

@menopausalmare I'm 41! Would that be an obvious reason behind it?

@FatherJoseFernandez Can I ask how Magnesium helps? Few posters have mentioned it now!

HedonistHuntress · 17/01/2024 21:37

Do you drink any alcohol at all?

Gogoyoyo · 17/01/2024 21:38

@Gymmum82 Sorry to hear you've been through it too! It would be interesting if it's my first symptom also, What came next for you?

Gogoyoyo · 17/01/2024 21:38

@HedonistHuntress Not a drop - Tee Total coming up to a 2 Years now.

Sounds like peri menopause.
Get some magnesium and stop drinking.

Gogoyoyo · 17/01/2024 21:39

@AliciaTried 🤣 Would if I could!

I listen to sleep hypnosis on YouTube. Particularly recommend a UK lady called Tansy Forrest. Very rare that it doesn't put me to sleep.

Gogoyoyo · 17/01/2024 21:40

@DustyLee123 I don't drink but will certainly be buying some magnesium tomorrow! Smile

FatherJoseFernandez · 17/01/2024 21:41

Is there any chance you could be peri menopausal? I was 38 when mine started 🤦🏽‍♀️ Magnesium is good for helping aid sleep and keeping bones strong during menopause

TheSmallAssassin · 17/01/2024 21:42

I have had to stop drinking caffeine earlier and earlier in the day as I've got older, I'd try cutting down on that first.

Pushkinini · 17/01/2024 21:43

Magnesium definitely. I also spray some lavender on the pillow, put one earphone in and listen to a podcast. I'm normally up for a wee at 3am ish, but I put the podcast back on, close my eyes and I usually drift back off.

marmitegirl01 · 17/01/2024 21:45

Not sure of your age but sleep was one of main reasons I tried HRT. Within a week my sleep was SO improved and remains so.

RedStripeypillow · 17/01/2024 21:46

Don't eat sugar/ chocolate in the evening. It definitely has a detrimental effect on my sleep and makes me wake up in the early hours.

Gogoyoyo · 17/01/2024 21:46

Thanks for all of the feedback - sounds like I'm a bit naive about the Menopause and need to start doing my research!
