Help with nits. First timer

Discovered nits on DD (7) last Tue, well I wasn't sure as it looked like dandruff but the pharmacist confirmed.

Treated with lyclear, also me for good measure, and nit combed according to nhs advice. Today is day 9 and there's still brown nit bits coming out, size of a grain of sand or slightly bigger (casings maybe? 🤢) No adult nits that I can see.

Should I give another go with the chemical stuff or is this normal?

Morrisons 5mins solution works well. Follow the instructions and then repeat in 7 days and it should work

FlatPeach · 17/01/2024 20:20

Thank you. I just don't want to treat again unnecessarily, the stuff rom the pharmacy bleached my favourite comfy bra so don't want to whack it on willy nilly.

First time nit owners so not sure what's normal. There's nothing moving when I comb. I'm itching everywhere of course

Have you found any actual live lice?
The nits are egg cases not the insects
Hatched eggs are white. Can you see any of them?

If you haven't found anything that moves then it may not be lice at all

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 17/01/2024 20:24

I treat 3 times, a week apart.

As soon as you see your chikd scratch their head, get looking, it's a sure sign. shudder

DD had nits after the 2007 floods when our water was cut off for days and we literally had just drinking and inches of water for washing/cooking. I nit comed her 3x daily and got rid of them that way.

FlatPeach · 17/01/2024 21:30

Ah so to clarify, there were 10 or so obvious lice on day one when I combed through after the treatment, eggs too which I thought dandruff originally.

Now there's tiny brown unmoving flecks when I wet comb through 8 days later but nothing is moving - I think maybe it's the dead bodies of the lice from when they were treated but I don't know how long they hang around for, it's nightmare inducing stuff. I wasn't prepared for THIS as a parent

i think I'll just treat again to be on the safe side, or just shave her head 😅

I used a nitty gritty comb and loads and loads of conditioner every 2/3 days for 3 weeks

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/01/2024 21:53

Unhatched eggs are brown , triangular shape and well glued to the hair. Most treatments suffocate them and the oiliness helps to unstick them.

Nitty Gritty combs have spiral tines . Brush up and down especially round the nape.
cheap conditioner, Tea Tree oil. And your Nitty Griity

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/01/2024 21:54

I don’t think she’ll appreciate you shaving her head 🤭

FlatPeach · 17/01/2024 22:34

Thanks for that, nitty gritty ordered from Amazon. I'll try that before the clippers!

This. In 18 years of parenting I've never used a special treatment. Just nitty gritty comb and conditioner

Viewfrommyhouse · 17/01/2024 22:39

I treated ds' hair on day 1, then combed through with a Nitty Gritty every night for another 6 days, then treated again, then combed through 2 or 3 times the next week. He had really long hair then too, it was bloody tiresome! He has a bath every night, so I'd just get in behind him and comb through.

muckymayhem · 17/01/2024 23:19

Ime you can get rid of them all in one go if you are prepared to comb with the nitty gritty for an hour or more with conditioner - twice through the whole head section by section from different directions. And don't forget to pay attention to the small baby hairs around the nape of the neck & around ears / forehead. Wipe comb on white paper towel and check through - only stop when theres definitely no bits. Followed up with a lice killing treatment for good measure. Little bastards must die.

Singleandproud · 17/01/2024 23:26

I never used chemical treatments. Just stock up on cheap conditioner and comb. Once you have the comb and you've cleared this infestation use it a few times a week when you wash her hair as normal to catch rogue ones, I used to do Dds hair with the comb on a Wednesday, Friday and Sunday that way they never took hold.

Sezime · 21/04/2024 09:14

So my boy with short hair has had them twice. I keep itching so we treated my hair which is very long and super thick.

Had anyone found a treatment that seems good on long and very thick hair? I used about 8 heads worth and still I'm itching but hair is too thick for the nit comb!

Bovrilla · 21/04/2024 09:18

Nitty Gritty comb and silicon based treatment (I think I used NitWits or something similar) which smothers both eggs and hatched lice. They can't build up resistance as it's a physical not chemical killer.

Smother childs head in the foam and leave at least 30 minutes. Comb out, then wash a good few times as it'll leave hair greasy feeling.

Change pillows and bedding. Normal washing will get rid of anything on sheets etc. check everyone else in the house with a conditioner and nitty gritty comb in case they're already spread the joy.

Never had to retreat the few times we had little visitors.
