Birthday treats with no sugar & no allergens

Hey
what do you take into school for your child’s birthday that is not Yo-Yos?
previous years they haven’t minded sweets, but this year they are being strict (no complaints here) it does make deciding what to take in for 27 kids quite tricky though.

Fruit?

Wtafis · 17/01/2024 16:59

The mumsnet favourite of Pom bears also fit the bill technically

EddieHoweBlackandWhiteArmy · 17/01/2024 17:04

I suggested fruit kebabs to the teacher, but there are a couple of children allergic to kiwi and strawberries, and apparently, they don’t think skewers are a good idea. (my dc will be 9!)

Pom Bears- hadn’t thought of that!

They will be getting a bag of air I think.

I did gel pens (buy a large multipacket and they get one each, which makes them quite cheap) or stickers went down well with one class.

ColleenDonaghy · 17/01/2024 18:07

Geez, that's tough. Non edible sounds like a good idea.

Have others brought in anything? Ask your DC, if it's not the done thing in their class I'd just (very happily!) leave it.

IfYouDontAsk · 17/01/2024 18:08

Rather than food, could you do a sheet of stickers for each child instead? You can get multipacks from places like Amazon for £7.

it’s a really kind thing to take treats in on your child’s birthday. As a mum of a child with an allergy though, I’m personally relieved that schools are cautious about this sort of thing.

Crunchymum · 17/01/2024 18:40

Youngest can't have sugar so we always do something non food related. This year it was a mini key chain poppet (she's just turned 7!)

bigboots4 · 17/01/2024 18:42

Glue sticks. There are never enough glue sticks and they can keep them in pencil cases.

Topofthemountain · 17/01/2024 18:50

Nothing, sounds far too much hassle.

Which is probably why they are saying it.

Topofthemountain · 17/01/2024 18:53

Further to my previous post, it would be better for the school to say "buy a book for the classroom" instead of getting things to hand out.

A book covers all budgets.

Rudolphtherednoseddog · 17/01/2024 19:00

Nothing. By age 9 they’re really too old for this. I find it annoying that it’s become an expectation in lower years - I’ve had my kid come out with an entire party bag.

JPduck · 17/01/2024 19:03

What about bubbles? You can get multi packs cheaply of small narrow tubes.

EddieHoweBlackandWhiteArmy · 18/01/2024 16:31

I am edging towards not bothering, my daughter doesn’t seemed to fussed, I just don’t want to be one of the few that don’t. Today DD came out with a party bag that has one sticker, one satsuma and one little pot of bubbles. Nothing terribly exciting for a 9yr old.

listsandbudgets · 18/01/2024 16:39

What's your budget?

DS got a puzzle rubber from someone in year 4 which he loved and was at least useful for his pencil case. However it would add up buying 30 of them though they usually come in multipacks like this sort of thing Puzzle rubbers

EddieHoweBlackandWhiteArmy · 18/01/2024 16:54

Listsandbudgets- ideally not much above £25/30 as we are having a party for her closest friends.

to be honest I would prefer to buy each child a book from the works. I will have a look to see if they have a bundle.

Is it really rubbish to get a pack of seeds to plant? Just looking for party bag type things and I hate all the plastic tat!

OP posts:
PandaG · 18/01/2024 17:27

I truly wouldn't bother for school friends, and do a book and a piece of cake for the actual party.

I guarantee at least 75% won’t get planted. It’s January, it takes effort from parents to get a pot, compost etc if they don’t already have such things, and they’re 8 not toddlers - the wonder of growing seeds has mostly worn off. Be honest - would your daughter really appreciate that from a classmate, and would you successfully plant and grow them?

They probably won’t appreciate one of the cheap multipack books from the works either.

Just do the party with her actual friends and forget the rest. Your daughter doesn’t care and I very much doubt anyone will notice or care much if she’s one of the few not handing stuff out on her birthday. If they do notice many parents would probably be grateful.

Doppelgangers · 18/01/2024 17:42

Forget food or plastic rubbish you need a pack of pencils with rubbers on the top. Two packs will set you back a couple of quid from the pound shop or the works.

Favouritefruits · 18/01/2024 17:44

Can you not just give them all a pencil or something useable and not tat, my kids got given a plain pencil with a rubber on the end but it’s dinosaur themed and they absolutely love it!

EddieHoweBlackandWhiteArmy · 18/01/2024 17:46

To be fair Rudolph, I mentioned seeds because she has been going on about when is best to plant tomatoes, so she would be interested but I accept she may be a minority.

I am just going to leave it
cheers all

I wouldn't bother.

GintyMcGinty · 18/01/2024 17:53

Our school just banned this.

Best result.

NewYear24 · 18/01/2024 18:04

Nothing.

alpenguin · 18/01/2024 18:20

Why do you need to take treats or gifts in to the class? What an odd convention.
