Advice on how to sell some stuff on ebay?

I have a big tub of stuff in my spare room I have had for years that I want to put on ebay, its everything from games, pop memorabilia, 1st edition comics to a couple of old camera's.

I have listed and sold one thing on ebay before but a long time ago now. I am just a bit clueless about how you work out how much postage and packing to charge, how much ebay take from you in fees. Where do you get your packing from? I know ebay used to do these no fee promotions, do they still happen? Is selling really the nightmare people say it is?

Its my resolution this year to finally list and hopefully sell this stuff so any advice would be great.

Vinted is much easier - buyer pays the postage and it's all worked out for you.

@Ronnie887 Thanks, I have never used vinted and thought it was just for clothes!

I agree, Vinted is much easier, no fees and buyer pays the postage. Just check what mailing options you've got selected if you don't own a printer or live near certain company drop off points.

You get much more money for items like this on eBay . Vinted is fine for average clothes

@curriedhat Well that is very useful information, thanks!

The Ebay site has lots of q&a pages with the answer to quite a few of your questions. Usually fairly easy to follow.

If you do a bit of research first to see what similar items have sold for, you'll get more of an idea what to put yours on for. Also whether you want to auction or just ask for a set price. I find it fairly user friendly.I always do everything through Ebay - payments, postage etc - never direct with the buyer. You do need to be alert to scammers but going through the site makes that much easier to avoid.

If you're wanting to get rid of stuff rather than make a lot of cash I think Ebay works fine.

@Lifeinlists I will look at the ebay advice pages thanks! I think my main question is pricing for postage as some items are heavyish, I feel like the only way I'd know how to price the postage would be to pack them up take them to the post office ask how much it would be to post them in the UK then take them home and list them which is obviously a bit unreasonable!

You can use Ebay postal rates. When you list something it will offer you various options according to weight and size. Just weigh things yourself if you've got digital kitchen scales.
Work out which is best value but it's advisable to make sure it's a tracked service.
I save packing from parcels - boxes, bubble wrap etc which reduces your costs.

I weight items that I sell first, and use flexible post bags mostly. If it's an item that needs to go in a box then I have a few around usually for a rough estimate.

If you research other similar items first, you can use the "Sell One Like This" option. It uses an existing listing to set up yours, you then need to edit each section to make it specific to your item and to add photos. Be careful to check each section and remove any irrelevant content and replace with your specifics.

The listing will be set up with a suggested auction starting price and will tell you what similar items have recently sold for. You can adjust these values or accept theirs. The listing can be previewed before posting it as live. You can also delay when the auction starts, if you want it to finish on a particular day at a particular time.

Obviously nice clear photos with a plain neutral background work the best. EBay have started offering an AI to write descriptions - I wouldn't bother with trying it as it came up with the most over the top guff for my straightforward item!

It sounds like the sort of stuff you have is eBay not vinted. Vinted is fab, but quite limited on what you can actually sell.

Have you got an eBay account that you buy things on? People will be reluctant to buy from someone who is new and has no feedbacks.

Get the app on your phone then click on start selling. It should guide you from there.

You can list in 2 formats, auction or buy it now. Most peoples preference is for a BIN where you fix the price. If you do decide to use auction don't make the start price less than you're prepared to sell it for. Sounds daft but people list things for 99p and then are upset when that's what they get for it.

Postage if you're using Royal mail you need to charge roughly £3.50 for up to 2 kg. Over that you can find the rates on their website. Make sure you use a TRACKED service (RM48) as there are loads of scammers out there and if it's not tracked you're not covered.
