Everything turned off but using £2 of electricity a day

I have temporarily moved out my home due due to domestic abuse. As my STBxH has now moved out it has been empty for a month or so as I need to clear his junk out before moving back in.
There is nothing turned on except the gas combi boiler is on for an hour a day to stop the pipes freezing. The smart metre shows the house is using £2 of electricity a day. Any ideas what might be using it? STBXH was into electronics could he have made something that eats up electricity and hidden it somewhere? Or could the heating really use that much?

I don't know how much it is per day but there is a standing charge that we all have for just having gas and electricity.

Flatpackedboxes · 17/01/2024 11:02

Standing charge.

exexpat · 17/01/2024 11:03

Could it just be the standing charge? If you look at your bills you will see that there is a fixed basic amount per day even if you don't use electricity.

SOBplus · 17/01/2024 11:08

If the appliance isn't off at the wall plug, it still uses electricity - up to 70% of full use energy - is every plug wall switch off?

FingerLickingGod · 17/01/2024 11:10

Standing charge

SoupDragon · 17/01/2024 11:12

The boiler will use electricity.

LordyMe · 17/01/2024 11:12

.

ExtremelyJoyous · 17/01/2024 11:12

The standing charge is a lot per day now, plus boiler use on top of that.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 17/01/2024 11:24

Standing charge between 40-50p? Plus electricity to run the boiler and the pump.

then anything left plugged in such as radio alarm clock, microwave / oven which has a clock displayed.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 17/01/2024 12:18

My electricity standing charge is 58p per day and cost per kWh is 27p - I'm on the Standard Variable Tariff (SVT) - charges per area might be slightly different because of the distribution costs for different parts of the country, but we'll all be in the same ball park on those rates. If you've capped your rates, they could well be higher than the SVT.

How much your combi boiler uses is determined by it's wattage - if you have an older one realistically it could be using £1.50 a day to stay on in standby mode then to heat the home for an hour or two.

Brackhurst · 17/01/2024 12:22

Do you mean your smart meter or the In Home Display (separate gadget that talks to your smart meter and displays usage)? If it’s the IHD, the pricing could well be set wrongly on it but it’s got no effect on your bill - you’re still billed correctly per your actual tariff.

ScaredAndPanicky · 17/01/2024 16:02

Yes the in house device is showing £2a day. I hadn't realised it shows the standing charge on there so that will account for some of it.

Yes there are only a couple of appliances in the house and they are all unplugged other than the boiler.

I went away for a few days at Christmas and noticed my usage (online, not IHD) was almost £2 per day when I wasn't there. I haven't got to the bottom of it yet. The standing charge is under 50p, so where is the other £1.50 going?!

Bunnyhopskip · 17/01/2024 16:09

Fridge freezer?

SorryIAintGotNoMoney · 17/01/2024 16:11

That's only about 8p an hour. The boiler will use some, fridge freezer, anything with a display e.g. microwave, TV on standby, etc. Anything like that ring a bell?

Bunnyhopskip · 17/01/2024 16:11

Charging devices? Things on standby? Even the smart meter will be powered by electricity so will be using something.

FixTheBone · 17/01/2024 16:13

If you say standing charge is roughly 50p, £1.50 at normalish rates is about 6kwh

Assuming it's device(s) with a constant draw that's about 250W...

A outdoor light, boiler burglar alarm, the smart meter display might add up to that..

Try turning flipping circuits while watching the IHD - may give you an idea at least where it is.....

There must be an electric timer for the boiler and could the cold weather be turning the pump on to circulate hot water to radiators.
