The dust is driving me crazy!! Any cleaning tips?

For context, I live in a flat in London. I've never experienced dust like it! The bathroom is the worst. There are no windows, so I don't understand where it comes from. I deep clean the bathroom once a week, but after one shower, I can see a layer of dust on all the surfaces. I'm pretty good at keeping the place clean and tidy (no pets or kids yet!). I hoover every day; there are only carpets in the bedrooms. Today, I took all the sofa cushions off and hoovered them & the rug. I filled up the vacuum cleaner! There has been some building work recently. I thought that was probably the source of the problem, but it's been a couple of months, and I'm still fighting the dust! I left a book on my bedside table and 4 days later there is a lovely dust imprint.

Does anyone have any tips? I'm 34 weeks pregnant, in nesting mode and going crazy!!

We live in a listed house that’s been here since bloody doomsday in the countryside. The dust is ridiculous. I say fuck it. Just wipe it down now and then. Enjoy your last few weeks of peace! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and I wish you a safe birth.

Takes ages after building work for the dust to settle.

Are you on a main road or a bus route? If so, that is the likely culprit. And if you figure out how to deal with it, please let me know!

A good Hoover with a duster brush attachment is the best way, better than even damp dusting.

and London air is filthy so houses inside get dusty with the pollution. Don’t leave your windows open much.

This is THE 'dustiest' house ivevever lived in. I don't call it 'dustbghoighr' as it's unlike normal house dust.

Take your glasses off if you wear them so you can't see it!

When I do see it, I use the brushy attachment on the hoover and suck it all up from the walls, the skirting boards, the corners of the ceiling and any unused surface or ledge. Either that or a damp duster.

I'm in central London and have the same issue, it drives me nuts and I have no solution. I literally have to dust my book on my bedside table before I pick it up. It's dark/black dust as well prob due to building works in the area. I hoover once or twice a day and am forever fucking wiping things. Solidarity!

m00ngirl · 16/01/2024 22:50

Btw your bathroom - if no window you prob have an extractor fan? Is the fan filled with dust?

username268 · 17/01/2024 13:59

@m00ngirl I'm glad I'm not the only one! I thought I was being pregnant crazy, but it really is a nightmare. Here's a picture of my extractor fan, so don't think that's the issue.

@DifficultBloodyWoman Not on a main road or bus route but there is constant building work so I guess that's probably it...

On the bright side, all the hoovering is going to tone up my arms for sure!

The dust is driving me crazy!! Any cleaning tips?
