Why are some slurs still seen as ok?

There was a thread title I recently reported, as it had the word "dumb" in it. It remained unedited and completely filled up, so I assume that up to 1000 people were fine with the term. Mumsnet also said that the word is in common parlance, so wouldn't be deleted. Why is it considered acceptable to use disabilities as a slur still? We rightly condemn sexism, racism etc, so why are disabilities seen as fair game?

You reported a thread because someone said dumb???

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 16/01/2024 18:02

I suppose because we now say mute where we would once have said dumb.

Malarandras · 16/01/2024 18:02

So the dictionary defines dumb as ‘lacking intelligence’. The use of it to describe a person as not being able to speak is labelled as an outdated, offensive term. So it’s your understanding that’s outdated arguably.

11NigelTufnel · 16/01/2024 18:10

@Malarandras The Oxford dictionary describes the word as referring to mute or silence, so I don't think that makes it outdated.

@Dartmoorcheffy I reported the title yes, not the thread contents.

🙄

MillicentRogers · 16/01/2024 18:13

Don't you have anything better to do than look for things to be offended by?

hardyloveit · 16/01/2024 18:14

Is this a joke post?

Sorry but this thread seems dumb!
How can you report a thread for the word dumb?
100% no one uses it as the meaning you are thinking of!

Yeah mute as in silent, not mute as in a nonverbal condition. I think you're reaching here, sorry.

MonsteraMama · 16/01/2024 18:40

What about the word do you find offensive?

donquixotedelamancha · 16/01/2024 18:42

What about the word do you find offensive?

Presumably OP gets called dumb a lot.

Alwaysalwayscold · 16/01/2024 18:44

Well to be honest with you a large majority of society still find it accessible to use vile racist slurs towards my ethnic group (I'm a gypsy, I'm sure you can guess which ones) so I'm not really looking to prioritise the word dumb.

KissMyArt · 16/01/2024 18:44

OP, are you saying if someone had a disability that meant they were unable to speak, you'd actually refer to them as dumb?

Dartmoorcheffy · 16/01/2024 18:47

I'm dumbstruck

TulipCat · 16/01/2024 18:49

It must be exhausting finding things to be offended by.

betterangels · 16/01/2024 18:51

Some people are looking for offence. It's dumb.

Somaliwildass · 16/01/2024 18:52

Unless you're using the word to describe someone's actual disability specifically, the word isn't a problem.

Even then the word itself isn't usually the issue, but any prejudiced or discriminatory intention.

MRSMTO · 16/01/2024 18:53

No one in the world finds the word Dumb offensive. I struggle to find any word offensive but that's probably because I have real problems to contend with.

SayBaby · 16/01/2024 18:54

Oh no, I call my cat dumb, dumbo, big fatty dumbo bum, dumbly bum bum dumbo all the time.

I hope he's not upset.

Throwawayme · 16/01/2024 18:56

You've screenshotted one definition. Click that box below for translations and more definitions and you'll see stupid is there. What a dumb post

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/01/2024 18:57

People still talk of ‘dumb animals’ and they don’t mean they’re stupid.

Personally I don’t like ‘dumb’ meaning stupid. It’s come from German, where ‘dumm’ does mean stupid, via American English.

The definition you attached isn't even from the Oxford dictionary.. it's from google! Even so, it still doesn't mention your meaning of the "slur" you are referring to.
Read the example!! Grin

11NigelTufnel · 16/01/2024 19:00

@Alwaysalwayscold I have no idea why racism towards gypsy communities is still seen as being fine. I am sorry that it has been directed towards you.

@KissMyArt of course not. I do know someone with mutism and it is a debilitating condition. I said it was a slur, not a medical term. But it seems no one agrees on this thread that it is an issue, so I guess that's me told. At least I didn't post in aibu!
