Why is my car freezing on the inside??

This has been happening for a while but was particularly highlighted yesterday when leaving work - all my colleagues cars were fine, but mine you could clearly see was all frosted inside the windscreen!
Why is it happening to my car and not anyone else’s? I’m at a loss here and it’s a total pain!!

Is your car damp inside?

Alargeoneplease89 · 16/01/2024 16:25

Probably a broken seal with one of your windows, my car does it but its old and don't really want to spend more money then needed.

carkerpartridge · 16/01/2024 16:44

It's probably a bit damp and the moisture is freezing when it's cold.

I don't know...but our car does it too. So annoying.

Shellingbynight · 16/01/2024 16:56

Yes, it's damp inside because you've got a leak (or you could have e.g. spilled a bottle of water on a floor mat). I had this with my previous car, and the garage identified a leak by the rear light on the hatchback.

Get a dehumidifier, water absorbing little pod, mine are from Asda. They become a reservoir of water, and the beads stop rattling. With a wet dog and wet boots I had the same problem, and it’s really helped. Surprising how much water was captured!

CormorantStrikesBack · 16/01/2024 17:03

I have this, no idea why. I have one of those dehumidifier pads and it doesn’t help. I often have to scrape my windscreen both sides!

Daffodilsandsunshine · 16/01/2024 17:03

I knocked over a bottle of water on a journey a month ago and ever since the inside of my windscreen gets icy or fogs up badly when its very cold outside.
We need to dehumidify the car!

CormorantStrikesBack · 16/01/2024 17:04

My friends laugh and say it’s because I drove into a river 3 years ago and flooded the inside of my car but that was 3 years ago now…..I’d have thought it was dried out by now…..it certainly seems dry but I know the carpets were wet for ages!

ArchetypalBusyMum · 16/01/2024 17:07

I get this but we are often getting in the car with wet coats and boots, or streaming gently on the way home from swimming etc.
I make a point of opening the windows on a hot day to dry the inside... But the problem and the cure don't coincide at the same time of year! 🫣

Think I need to get the dehumidifier things pp mentioned.

Cat litter is also a good way of drying out a car - put it in a sock or old pair of tights and leave one on the dashboard and one on the boot shelf.

My car is always damp in winter due to work (dog walker) and this makes a huge difference. I also try not to leave damp towels etc. sat in the car overnight.

BooseysMom · 16/01/2024 17:11

My car is 24 years old and it has always got condensation on the inside of the windscreen. The rear window drops but can't see/feel any obvious damp patches. What I am worried about is that a stupid garage did something to it when trying to fix the rear washer and the back seat was completely soaked. Another garage found the issue though and so I would hope it's dried out now but maybe it never completely dries.

Tighginn · 16/01/2024 17:11

If you have air vents on the front window block them with bluetack, dot little dehumidifier boxes around your car and pop a hot water bottle on your dash. Turn the a\c up high to clear it quickly.

Annimousey · 16/01/2024 17:29

You can use moisture-absorbing products, such as silica gel, to reduce humidity. And try to provide proper ventilation, using defrost settings, and reducing the humidity inside can help.

Shellingbynight · 16/01/2024 17:57

While I was waiting for my car to dry out I used one of these on the dashboard - I recharged it every couple of weeks in the microwave. It was very effective.
