NHS hearing aids

Soontobe60 · 16/01/2024 16:06

I had my hearing tested today at Specsavers, and have hearing loss in both ears. The person doing the assessment said I qualify for NHS hearing aids. He said they didn't have any available to show me, but did show me some they have available privately.
Does anyone have an NHS hearing aid, and would they recommend Specsavers??

Don't know how old you are but if your under 50 I'd reccomend going to your GP and asking for a referral to a ENT consultant.
I did having worn hearing aids for a few years due to hearing loss and have had an operation on 1 ear and now don't need any aids. I'm having the other ear done soon too.
Its been life changing, didn't realise how much I'd not been hearing, restricting going to loud place and talking to people due to it.

What is the name of the operation? Thanks

Lifebeganat50 · 07/02/2024 15:24

Of COURSE this company which sells their own hearing aids didn’t have any nhs available to show you at the time -catch on people 😂

Sounds like you’ve got a good result OP

Everyone refers to NHS hearing aids. Don’t they have any other name?

Has anyone heard of Signia Active Pro. A family member in the USA has them and says they are the latest technology.

No. Because different NHS trusts use different brands and models.

crazycatladie · 07/02/2024 16:24

My mum has got some of the mid priced ones from spec savers and is very happy with them. She said the boots ones were a lot more expensive for their equivalent.

Move22 · 07/02/2024 16:30

Hey everyone on here! Just bringing your attention to the fact that those who wear hearing aids are entitled to a disability railcard so you and an accomplice (does not have to be the same travel companion each time) can get discounted travel! HTH

amicissimma · 07/02/2024 16:56

I got NHS ones from the hospital, via the ENT department.

The audio technician spent ages adjusting and tweaking them so that they were just right for me. Then made me an appointment to come back and report how I got on in the real world. Further tweaks and adjustments. She's very fussy and insisted on regular appointments to keep them optimal. As a result I believe I got the best possible.

Also free batteries, tubes and maintenance.

Wouldn’t it be helpful to mention the brand. “My NHS hearing aids are very good” is as helpful as say “My NHS hearing aids are very bad”
A brand name might help pinpoint the good from the bad.

Different brands suit different people at the various stages of a hearing loss. I’ve mostly had Phonaks but did have Oticon for a while. The Oticons are more natural sounding but I needed something more powerful which the Phonaks could provide.

I have NHS hearing aids.
If I were to buy private ones just as good, it would cost at least £2,000 per ear. I would also then have to pay for any repairs, and not have a replacement when my aid is being repaired.

That's not quite right. With private ones repairs are usually covered for 5 years, replacements are provided, you gave 6 monthly hearing tests and reprogramming, filter and cone changes

Americans always believe they have the latest technology but have only recently discovered electric kettles. They believe any old nonsense.

Not on the wrong thread at all. You are extolling the advanced technology based on what an American has told you They always believe they have the best because that is their mentality and what they are conditioned to believe. It isn't always the case.

That’s what I have. The only thing I’ve struggled with is when someone is phoning me - they ring and I look round to see where the sounds coming from. It’s hilarious when I’m in class teaching and I ask who made that noise. Oh, and dont leave them where the cat can get them 😂

I have 6 ‘private’ hearing aids from various places Boots Specsavers and they were all of no use to me - now have NHS and they are wonderful 🙏🏽 So if any of you lovely people know how I can maybe let someone benefit from my redundant 🦻 hearing aids I’d be v grateful TIA 👍☘️🌟

@eveoha I have an elderly aunt in a care home who has lost hers and she doesn't have £2k for new ones . The waiting list is a year long so if you have any spare I'd be happy to take them off your hands 🙏🙏

If I've read that wrong then please ignore

RainbowWilf996 · 21/02/2024 08:33

hi everyone I will tell you something

NHS is good providing hearing aids as I has my Bluetooth hearing aids from my hospital it gave me more sounds to hear so I recommend NHS is best

Hearing aids are as individual as specs you can’t just pass em on and home they A fit and B are tunes to the right frequencies. It’s not just “ make it louder “ like an ear trumpet !

Book an nhs hearing assessment and get her nhs aids. Go to an optician that does them under nhs. It won’t be a long wait ( shop around if it is ) and we have been surprised how good nhs aids are for father in law

boredybored · 21/02/2024 09:11

@Helenloveslee4eva they told us the wait is a year in her area and I don't think she will live that long tbh
