Blood clots in lungs - banged my head :S

I'm recovering from x3 PE's in my lungs - on warfarin for life.

Just bashed my head against an open cupboard door. The type of bash that makes you go 'oww' and rub your head. I haven't cut anything and there's no bump.

Am I in danger though from getting a bleed in my head though?

No idea what to do. Such a minor injury in reality but being on warfarin makes me so on edge.

Any GP's on here?

No increase in pulse/o2 I feel absolutely fine. No bump, no bruise. Just panicking and can't get a doctor's appointment. What would they even do anyway?!

My Mum has to go if she bangs her head as she is on Apixiban which does the same sort of thing as Warfarin. She cracked open her head falling off a gardening stool and neighbours called an ambulance for her, I got there from work just as it arrived. They took her to hospital. She is 88 now and apparently she had a very small bleed on the brain, although we were not told at the time but it is becoming more apparent now she has memory issues. Any bang on the head really needs to be looked at especially if accompanied by nausea or confusion and particuarly if you are on warfarin. I'd nip to A&E although I know in reality no one 'nips' to A&E but the best time is 10am - 11am as that's normally when its quietest. Take a book, a flask and something to eat although maybe eating is dodgy if you have banged your head.

I think you should get medical advice. It is a legitimate question and presumably the first time this has happened to you. The medical professionals are there to help you with these things - it is OK to ask them for advice when in recovery from such a serious issue.

You will get used to your medication very soon, but at the start, please feel confident in asking for advice.

If the GP is hard to get hold of, a pharmacist might be able to help you.

You would need to visit A&E to be checked out. You may need a head CT, though of course this isn't definite. The advice is to err on the side of caution when you sustain a head injury whilst on blood thinners.

If i'd cracked it or fallen I'd absolutely go. Just feel a bit silly for having just given it a little knock on a cupboard door. Last night I went to A&E (on warfarin, huge head pain, thought it was a brain bleed) I was there for 36hrs. It's put me right off going - I genuinely had reason to believe there was something seriously wrong and still spent that long there.

There's nothing wrong with me now, no headache. FFS. AGHH! Might try the GP's tomorrow morning and see if they will send me to the dayunit instead, might be a quicker in and out. Thanks for responding.

I'm sorry OP - what a pain in both senses of the word.

I would recommend health professional needs to see you for an assessment. Can you get to your GP/A&E/minor injuries unit/Walk-in-centre this afternoon? You should ask someone else to drive, until you have been seen.

Hope everything goes OK

HappyHamsters · 15/01/2024 13:58

The gp will probably request a scan so call them, 111 or go to hospital. Brain bleeds can be slow.

Littlegoth · 15/01/2024 14:06

Any head injury on warfarin can cause a bleed and needs medical attention. You need to go and get checked x

murasaki · 15/01/2024 14:10

I'm on blood thinners and was told to go to a and e if I banged my head. Please go.

LightSwerve · 15/01/2024 14:10

If you want advice before you go, ring 111 or phone the pharmacy.

I know you don't want to go, but you really should follow medical advice, so get some ASAP.

Tarantella6 · 15/01/2024 15:06

Given that last time your head hurt it was fine and this time it doesn't hurt, logically you're probably fine but bodies are not logical! Have you got a minor injuries or anything similar that might be a bit quicker than A&E?

eggsandbaconeveryday · 15/01/2024 15:13

Did you not stay in A&E ? I'm on warfarin for life and will always get checked out if I knock my head. A brain bleed can take a few days to appear

brightyellowflower · 15/01/2024 19:12

Ok so Dr has referred me to the SDEC which is the same day emergency care. I'm going to go first thing in the morning and get scanned. Wait time was 8-12 hrs this evening and I've got no childcare. They're at school tomorrow and wait time from 8.30 is 2-3 hrs.

I realised I said last night i went a&E, I meant last time I went a&E.

Realistically it's nothing but I do want to get checked out so will head there first thing in the morning. If I start getting any serious symptoms in the meantime, obviously will go straight there.
