Does anyone do any typing jobs from home - transcription?

Trying to find some part-time work that I can do from home, flexible hours if possible due to family commitments. Was thinking transcription might be the way to go and have done a bit of googling. There seem to be a few companies but the focus looks to be medical or legal. I have many years experience in PA/EA roles and do have some medical experience but from years and years ago and I can’t provide any references relating specifically to it. Wondering if anyone does something along these lines and whether you might have any advice please.

Thanks.

I looked into it a while back and the general consensus from my research seemed to be that the rates of pay are so low that you end up with less than NMW so not worth doing.

Hopefully that’s changed but I doubt it!

@Minfilia crikey that’s not good. It might be a case of needs must though. I’m being nosey but did you find an alternative wfh or give up on the idea?

A firm that got a lukewarm recommendation on here a few years ago was Sterling Medical. I looked into it but my only laptop was a Mac back then abd they requiyou to have a Windows setup.

Agreed that I would have seen it as a way of making eg about half my food budget, not in any way a full salary.

I've been a self-employed transcriber for 25 years. The last year has been dire - poor recordings, poor dictation, etc - now AI has taken over the industry I think you'd be very hard pushed to find ongoing, reliable work at a decent price.

I used to do this with Dict8. They only wanted NHS medical secretaries at that time and I needed a reference from my line manager and consultant. The pay was awful and they were so persnickety🙄

InfraredMarbles · 15/01/2024 12:48

I did it many years ago while studying. If you were very fast pay was ok, factoring in that it could be done remotely and whenever was convenient. Now with AI and dictation transcribing software I imagine it's necessary far less frequently and will disappear almost entirely before long: it's exactly this type of manual task that is suitable for automation.

Try data entry on Glassdoor or totaljobs search. My keyboard skills are slow so I didn't pay much attention to the pay but it might suit.

Perhaps target some professional service firms like large firms to see if they use homeworkers. Also get on Linkedin and Indeed and search for fully remote roles that might work? They do exist.

If you have PA/EA experience, there are a number of virtual PA firms (try searching on LinkedIn for reputable ones) that may be a fit, the work is often piecemeal I believe so may well fit with your availability.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Hadn’t thought too much about the impact of AI advances but probably very relevant. Data entry or itty-bitty PA jobs might just be the way to go if I can find anyone to give someone keen but rusty a chance! And a good idea to approach firms directly. Will do some further digging tomorrow. Thanks again.
