Working for benefits

Could there be an argument made to make people that are eligible for work to do some community based work in return for their benefits?

And the people already paid a proper wage for doing these things? What about them?

Startingagainandagain · 15/01/2024 11:09

Why?

If a job needs doing someone should be employed and paid accordingly to do it.

Exactly. There's enough exploitation in this country.

AtLeastHalfRelieved · 15/01/2024 11:11

Well wouldn't that just be...giving them a job? And therefore need to be paid at whatever rate said job usually pays?

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 15/01/2024 11:13

No.

IVFNewbie · 15/01/2024 11:14

Yes indeed- giving them a job- but them being made to do it in return for their benefits.

You do know a vast proportion of benefits claimants are working don't you? You know, in real, paid, sometimes full time jobs? Or are you of the opinion that all benefits claimants are lazy layabout's?

IVFNewbie · 15/01/2024 11:14

Yes indeed- giving them a job- but them being made to do it in return for their benefits.

Or, just help find them a job they can do?

You seem to be implying that people on benefits are work shy as the flip side of what you say is no work no benefits?

IVFNewbie · 15/01/2024 11:19

There are certainly people on benefits that are work-shy. Not all or even most, but definitely some.

I don’t understand why they couldn’t just be employed and paid a wage rather than what you’re suggesting, ie. Under pay them via the benefits system

No, there couldn't. HTH

MaidOfSteel · 15/01/2024 11:23

Would you like them to wear a scarlet 'U' on their clothing, too, so they could be easily identified as unemployed and shamed?

If there is a job that needs doing, pay someone a decent and proper wage to do it.

Ormside · 15/01/2024 11:28

Monday morning and another benefit bashing thread. If it's such a wonderful lifestyle I'm surprised everyone doesn't choose it.
On another thread this morning there's a suggestion that keeping on having DC gets you a windfall. This despite the 2 child cap being introduced in 2017.

IVFNewbie · 15/01/2024 11:30

No need for a scarlet 'U', I don't think.
There are plenty of jobs that could be done. Cleaning up graffiti, litter picking, etc.
And- there are also people that want to work but survive on benefits (which indicates that this is a proper, decent wage and enough to live on). Why shouldn't there be a reciprocal arrangement?

MythicBish · 15/01/2024 11:30

@IVFNewbie let me guess, you’re a Tory right? 🙄

IVFNewbie · 15/01/2024 11:31

I am not 'benefits bashing', just interested in arguments for and against.

Im sure no one like big business or the government would take advantage of that system. Google work for the dole in Australia and do some reading, if you're a half decent person that'll completely turn you off the idea. It reinforces disadvantage in vulnerable groups. Participants effectively receive less than minimum wage and have been exposed to unsafe and unregulated working conditions,. A teenager died from unsafe working conditions. The fears of exploitation welfare groups had were completely founded. The system costs money to run, so of course the government cuts back on the oversight and safety. There was some nice sounding PR in the early days about upskilling people, but its effectively just an underpaid and exploited workforce. Of course its probably what those dole bludgers, as we call them over here, deserve.

PS. Heavy sarcasm filter employed

The benefits system is already geared up to weed out the work-shy. So how is your system going to identify the work-shy when the current system can't. How are you going to identify those that genuinely cannot work due to a disability? Or are you just thinking that they can be made to work anyway or just left to starve as they don't matter?

IVFNewbie · 15/01/2024 11:39

Clearly there would need to better controls that what has been experienced in Australia.

It's not 'my system'. I just started a discourse.

ffs
What's with the anti-benefits threads today?
Urrgh. This place is horrible sometimes.

IVFNewbie · 15/01/2024 11:46

Just to be clear- I absolutely do believe in benefits.

OK then.

How do you think a work-for-benefits system would weed out the [definitely some] of those who are work-shy? How do you imagine it would identify those who are unable to work? How do you imagine such a system would ensure those with genuine disabilities are protected?
