HELP - Severe trapped wind - 15 month old

Please help, I'm at the end of my tether
DD has always had a bit of a sensitive tummy. Early on realised she suffered from CMPA so did a full dairy elimination, which helped considerably. Once we weaned and introduced eggs (which she loved) we realised she'd have awful nights with trapped wind. Complete egg elimination again solved that issue. She then suffered from constipation when we weaned until about one year and we gave her lactulose daily, this sorted itself.

We've been to the GP and the health visitors and the paediatric allergy clinic (we have food allergies in the family so she was seen early). We are trying to reintroduce milk and egg under the guidance of the allergist. However, even on weeks where we have been stable and not introducing new foods, DD isn't poorly, etc., we have nights where she's up howling for hours, thrashing about in her crib and won't settle until eventually the wind passes.

Last night I heard her cry out occasionally but settled herself from 8-10 p.m. But from 10:30-130 she was up screaming, arching her back, kicking her legs. We are still nursing and she does find comfort in that but my poor nipples are like sandpaper after hours of her gnawing away. And she is so unhappy and unsettled that even nursing or a cuddle don't do much to help for long.

Other things we have tried:
Infacol
Gripe water
Increasing fluids during dinner
Bicycling legs
Cat cow/all fours
The usual settling techniques: swaying, swinging, singing, bringing her in our bed (she doesn't cosleep and generally is quite happy in her crib, settles on her own, sleeps 8 hour stretches and wakes once for a quick nurse...on a good night)
Avoiding gas causing foods (lentils and houmouus seem to be triggers, whilst other beans are alright)
Calpol: doesn't help tummy pain (tried out of desperation one night!)

She's not yet walking independently (cruises quite proficiently and takes a step or two independetly but not fully walking) but is fairly active during the day crawling about and going up stairs (supervised of course). Lately she has been having a bite or two of banana, which she previously didn't like, so perhaps she's sensitive to that? Her eating is alright, but often if she's got trapped wind or needs to do a poo she won't eat much and then makes up for it afterwards.

I've read some old threads on this but never saw any updates on what worked, if DC grew out of this or whether there was any solution. The last nights have been awful for her (and for me) and we're both knackered. I'm a nurse so quite need my wits about me whilst I'm on duty. Please help, any ideas or suggestions or experiences welcome xx

Not much advice to offer but I gave my 8mo DD banana and she was up all night with trapped wind

Perhaps it's banana then, she always refused it but recently has been trying a few bites of it, so sorry you've experienced this too 😓

Have you completely eliminated dairy and egg from your diet too? I had a Cmpa baby with additional egg and soya allergies and when I was still breastfeeding even small amounts I ate resulted in a reaction for baby.

Could she also have a soya allergy/sensitivity? Very common alongside Cmpa and soy is an ingredient in so many things (white bread, gravy, chocolate!)

HowAboutTheLittleSpoon · 15/01/2024 11:55

I was also going to mention soya as a potential allergen, as it's often seen in children with CMPA. DS had CMPA, and soy made him constipated/rashy. Feel for you OP, it's so hard to see them in so much pain and you don't know how to help.

watermelonsugar25 · 15/01/2024 13:23

Thank you all, yes, I have also eliminated eggs from my own diet. Soya she is somehow completely fine with so we are both eating it, though in small and infrequent amount. I wish there were a way to help with the pain, it is so hard to watch her suffer.

@watermelonsugar25 hi just wondering if this resolved for you? My lo also has incredibly sensitive digestive and multiple food allergies

watermelonsugar25 · 12/08/2024 18:59

@LSMZ yes she did grow out of it, hard to recall exactly when but not too long after I wrote the above post. She’s also grown out of most of her food allergies/intolerances and sleeps through most nights. Hope that things get better for you and your LO xx
