Sunny Delight

I've been enjoying this podcast series called Toast, about the rise and fall of big name companies such as Toys R Us, Jamie's Italian, Club 18-30, and the Commodore 64. This episode is about Sunny Delight: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0JeMKDnFayh1wu4GCzbwsK
(Also available on BBC Sounds if you don't use Spotify).

I was a teenager when Sunny Delight was launched, and my mum bought it once, so we could try it, but we weren't hooked in - my mum was pretty good at reading ingredients lists, even back then. But it's quite fascinating to hear the background about the marketing, and how it almost out-sold Coca-Cola for a while (before everyone realised it was full of sugar and might turn the kids yellow if they drank too much). 😁

Listen to this episode from Sliced Bread Presents on Spotify. Why did sales of the best-selling soft drink, Sunny Delight, suddenly bomb in the 1990s?While Sliced Bread takes a break we serve up… Toast. A study of the spectacular failures of brands whi...

For some reason I thought it had veg oil in it too like another poster. I may have been older but I remember realising it was crap!

Also remember lucozade being wrapped up and used for illness. So random!

I once heard it described as it tasting like someone had tried to make orange juice without using any oranges.

😄

The US version has canola (rapeseed) oil in it, I expect the one we used to get in the UK was the same before they made it 'healthy'!

And yes, I do remember it, I really liked it. Can still remember the taste really clearly.

Same with mountain dew, loved that stuff. I bought some on a whim the other week and it was absolutely grim!

Ah yes! That will be right.

Yes I think it was an ambient product that was chilled for "effect" - and the second largest ingredient was sugar

Titsywoo · 15/01/2024 21:29

I hated Sunny D - so overly sweet. I never had a sweet tooth though.

CopperLion · 15/01/2024 21:32

I loved the California one! Used to but it with my pocket money as my parents wouldn’t buy it for us. They didn’t fall for the marketing ploy.

KohlaParasaurus · 15/01/2024 21:37

My children loved Sunny Delight for a while. None of them turned yellow. I didn't mind buying it for them. I couldn't be puritanical about such things since I'd grown up on Creamola Foam and full sugar fizzy pop, and Lucozade when I was ill, as previous posters have mentioned.

WinterSnowFox · 15/01/2024 21:37

Use to love it! My mum bought it all the time for my little brother but we use to drink it all. Preferred California one. I would still buy it now if I could, tried the one now that’s been rebranded but it was nowhere near the same and tasted very watery.

Noneofourbusiness · 15/01/2024 21:42

Does anyone remember the green sunny delight? I loved that, must have been around 17 then.

I remember someone at work in the early 00s saying. They gave there children sunny delight every day because it was good for them Confused

I never bought Sunny Delight - one look at the radioactive colour told you something was not right.
I also get wary of products with made-up names. I buy stuff like 'beef' or 'cheese' (because I know what they are!); things like 'Sunny Delight' or 'Elmlea' are UPF hiding behind cute-sy names.
