Still testing Covid positive day 6, normal for immuno compromised people?

I feel I'm expected to automatically be negative after 5 days and over it by now.
I tested positive on Monday after waking up unwell last Sunday.
Was unwell but ok till Weds when started really struggling.

I'm a student in the middle of an already deferred (last month -disability related) assessment at uni and really worried. My assessment involves a dozen others, (who have to be prepared) and specialist room booking (others competing for it)

I panicked and instinctively begged not to be cancelled last week, and my equipment has been left in situ and a projected schedule created for this week.
It gives me until Tuesday AM to stop testing positive.
People are saying latest strain is short and mild but my breathing and temperature are getting worse not better.

I was immunized, (missed most recent one) took antibiotics and was told that could mean as little as 4 to 7 days, but also that I could be infectious for up to10 to 20 days as I'm deliberately immuno suppressed for other treatment.
Told uni both, they have prepared for short option only.

This morning's test is a heavy clear line exactly as on day 1. Could it just stay like that but still vanish by Tuesday, or does it need to get fainter or thinner 1st?

My head is all over the place, and I'm feeling pressure to say I'm ok, because everyone says I should be after day 5, and getting Covid isn't a big deal now.

I think getting covid is still a big deal for lots of people. Me and my husband caught it the week before Christmas, he was still testing positive with a dark thick line 7 days after his first test, I had a faint line 8 days after my first test. We had both had our booster jabs. I am still not 100% even now. I can't advise on the uni front, but I hope you feel better soon.

Uniworries · 14/01/2024 14:11

Thank you. I'm sorry you spent Christmas with it. I think I probably caught it from Christmas visitors or shopping afterwards.
Can I ask how long before either of you tested negative?

I am not immune compromised, was triple vaccinated and still ill with it for 2 full weeks. I had a temperature for over 10 days. It took approx 14 days for my tests to clear.

Not sure that helps but I don't think you can be certain you'll be clear by Tuesday.

I’m immuno suppressed and took
13 days to get a negative test

Munchyseeds2 · 14/01/2024 14:15

First time I had covid it took 11 days to get a neg test and I wasn't able to go back to work until I had one

6 days is not unusual for anyone

2nd time I didn't test so I have no idea!

Munchyseeds2 · 14/01/2024 14:16

I am not immunosuppressed

PTSDBarbiegirl · 14/01/2024 14:17

What kind of test are you using? I tested neg on lateral flow but GP was sure I'd had new strain as felt v unwell for a few weeks. Are you uk?

ParadisePhantom · 14/01/2024 14:18

I am immunosuppressed and it took me 16 days to get a negative test.

MigGirl · 14/01/2024 14:20

Unless your course has asked you or you feel to unwell you don't have to test negative to go in. There are no restrictions now so on that front you don't need to worry about it. You don't even have to be off at all if you don't feel to unwell, unless your employer has a specific policy (some still do).

I'm sorry you're feeling really unwell though. I got it the first time before being vaccinated and was ill for over 3 weeks.

Poblano · 14/01/2024 14:25

I tested positive for 10 days when I had Covid. I'm not immunocompromised but am asthmatic so have had more vaccination doses than people of my age without health problems.

Uniworries · 14/01/2024 14:25

All that is backing up what I was warned and the opposite of what seemed to be expected at uni.

PTSDBarbiegirl I'm UK and it's lateral flow tests. I was told they aren't always good at picking it up, but are very reliable at saying when it's ended if they have picked it up.

MigGirl That's what's being implied, that I should just turn up and risk giving it to everyone else and that wouldn't matter, but no one has actually said it, just talked about it being my choice.
They would all know who gave it to everyone and it seems a very selfish thing to do, but also I'm feeling quite desperate.

Check with uni what rules are. At work if we test positive it's 5 days off from that date but don't need to keep testing so check if they mean you have to test negative or whether you just have to wait 5 days after the positive test. You don't gain anything from repeatedly testing. Complications can happen after testing negative anyway.

Paw2024 · 14/01/2024 14:55

I'm immunocompromised and had paxlovid
Negative day 5, rebounded and positive again day 7, was still testing positive 19 days later!

Uniworries · 14/01/2024 15:01

So is the current thinking that after five days you're still infectious but other people wont get it? Have I missed something?

I'm really worried about infecting the people who volunteered to be part of my assessment, but it sounds like it isn't seen as a worry?

I'd be beyond furious if I found out one of my Christmas guests came knowing they were infectious and didn't care that they'd given it to me.

I think it was around 10 days when we tested negative. By Tuesday it will be day 9 for you so I think if you test on that day and there is still a positive line I would wear mask. Don't forget most people aren't even bothering to test any more.

DontKaleMyVibe · 14/01/2024 17:59

I tested positive (and was unwell) for over two weeks. The tests started developing the positive slower (1-2 minutes rather than immediately) and fainter after about 10 days though.
