There is a fox having a nap in my garden right now...

I was in my kitchen and just saw that there is a fox having a nap in the middle of my garden.

Any suggestion of what to do?

We used to have urban foxes living in our communal garden and they just went about their lives when I was in London but I have never had the pleasure of finding one in my own garden....

I don't want to chase it away but I also am wondering if it might be injured (and who to call if it is?) or if it is planning on squatting my garden from now on...

Any advice on how to deal with this?

Pic of the fox below.

I have a cat but it is staying indoor at the moment as I have only had her for a couple of weeks so I am not worried about her being at risk.

Do people have foxes in their garden? do you feed them?

That sounds fantastic. It's a long time since I've lived near foxes. They're great to watch playing.

It’s not. London is overrun with foxes - they eat from our dustbins, mate all night on our lawns, & shit on our vegetable patches. I swear they are laughing at us in their lairs.

We often get foxes it never occurred to me to be worried about it! He's just having a snooze he's fine. My mum feeds her fox but I'm not sure what. If you do they might end up quite tame though, my sister got nudged on the toe while she was sunbathing!

Admittedly the yowling and subsequent mating (on the middle of our back green, exhibitionists that they were!) not quite so much.

Had forgotten that 😳

Earlier this year I had a mother fox and six baby foxes living at the bottom of the garden, there were always a couple of them out playing or sleeping. I fed them puppy food pouches and water during the summer, they seemed to move away at the end of the summer though. Next door's jack russell wasn't happy about them being there though.

Shitting on toys is a particular irritant! We had a deposit on a slightly flat football- balanced on top. Not nocturnal here, multiple sightings every day. Favourite napping spot is on top of sheds or ‘garden rooms’- nice and warm from all the home workers.

We have a fox who naps, just like that, in our garden. But we do feed her. I think it's a sign they feel safe there. Yours doesn't look injured.

The Fox Project are good people to ask for advice.

Lonelycrab · 14/01/2024 12:24

There’s not many noises that are worse than the sound of foxes mating.

Soubriquet · 14/01/2024 12:25

I’m so jealous. I love foxes. Foxes and hedgehogs are my two favourite animals.

I have plenty of experience with hogs including hand rearing wild babies but I’ve never seen a wild fox

WinterLobelia · 14/01/2024 12:25

Oh gorgeous!

We have a fox who often naps in the day time on one of my garden seats. He just feels very comfy in our garden. One of our previous cats used to chase him out but she is deceased now so he is more at home. I was trying to persuade DH to get one of those cute (expensive!!) garden shepherd huts last year and he just said that no, I could NOT get a purpose built annex for the fox. Grin

Clawdy · 14/01/2024 12:25

I put food out for our fox, but not every night, in case they start to rely on it too much! Love the odd glimpse of them from time to time.

hangingonfordearlife1 · 14/01/2024 12:26

just leave him, have loads in our garden and make a right racket at night

heyduggee12345 · 14/01/2024 12:28

Are foxes dangerous or are there different types?

WinterLobelia · 14/01/2024 12:35

We also have badgers and a badger set in our compost corner which means we havent used it for compost for years now.

badger cubs are the cutest things ever.

No hedgehogs though.

My daughter got woken up by them the other night and asked me why the neighbours were hurting their baby. It's a god awful noise.

Myotherdogsanoodle · 14/01/2024 12:35

Please don’t encourage him if there’s anyone who keeps chickens in your neighbourhood!!

greencatz · 14/01/2024 12:37

They sleep in my garden in the day. You'll see more about at the moment because it's breeding season. They have a sweet tooth and love a jam sandwich

EmmaEmerald · 14/01/2024 12:43

Now mum's of an age, every year in breeding time I have to remind her not to panic if she hears crazy noises at night!

What makes me laugh is when a fox walks past me on the street, in the day... I say hi, but I'm thinking "why aren't you asleep?" 😂

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 14/01/2024 12:43

Check on him in a couple of hours. I absolutely wouldn’t feed him if you’ve got a new cat, they tend to not be actively aggressive but kitty is coming off worst in a fight and feeding the fox will encourage him to return.

Oh my god badger cubs! 😍

We have foxes in the garden regularly. Playing, napping, being rowdy or just sitting there. We don’t feed them but they seem to have their den in a neighbouring garden and spend a lot of their time in ours. Given up trying to deter them as you have to use deterrents forever and none of them last forever, so can get quite expensive. Every year there are a new set of little ones. They are entertaining to watch but also a pain as anything that gets left in the garden is shredded or stolen, and holes dug all over the lawn and into the roots of plants.

Starreyskies · 14/01/2024 12:49

So beautiful!

I'd be tempted to throw it a roast chicken. It is Sunday after all 😁

Mostly a joke so don't pile on.

Oh do shhh, that's up to the chicken keepers to keep them safe. They should have already fox proofed.

He's stunning OP, just enjoy the view.

We had a fox kill a cat in our garden and left it on the back doorstep we wondered what had happened and looked at cctv it was awful do not encourage it they are wild animals

Sera1989 · 14/01/2024 13:06

What a lovely looking fox! My dad used to only cut his grass twice a year to create a "wildlife garden" (I think it was mainly laziness) and in the spring he would often get a whole family of foxes napping in the grass with two or three cubs sleeping and mum either there or off hunting. It was lovely to see but I did get a shock a couple of times when walking to the bottom of the garden and I accidentally woke a large cub who darted off like lightning. I think it's unusual to see them napping in the open at this time of year as it's chilly but I wouldn't think there is anything wrong with the fox. But I wouldn't encourage them, if nothing else, their poop stinks!
