Thermal base layers?

Pinkballetfrog · 13/01/2024 18:53

I am looking for a thermal base layer top.

Everywhere that I look online, it's all polyester and arcylic fibres.

I hate these in clothes. I lover natural fibres.

I checked for wool base layers/Merino but the prices are too expensive. Some of them even nearing 80 pounds and it's too much.

Would a long sleeved cotton t-shirt under my clothes work as a thermal base layer?

I will be going to Poland next week and it will be cold.

Keep looking for wool, merino base layers are in the sales at present.

try decathlon, Howies, Peter Storm, Mountain Warehouse, Lands End,

one wool merino base layer will last you all week, unless you are skiing or hill walking. They don’t smell and are amazing.

or try Damart, M and S for cotton vests. Bit old fashioned but warm.

Snowydaysfaraway · 13/01/2024 18:59

Aldi base layers are fab.

BrownTableMat · 13/01/2024 19:06

Mountain warehouse has some in the sale for £24.99 plus currently an extra 20% off. They’re only 70% merino (30% polyester) but I have a couple and they do feel very warm and natural: https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/search/merino/

Otherwise, not as warm as merino, but I have several of the Lands End silk thermals and they are very comfortable.

preloved Merino layers (women's sizes) have been selling for < £15 recently on ebay

I took my 3 kids to Lapland before Xmas, it was minus 26 and we were fine with cheap thermals from decathlon. Though we were wearing snow suits over them 😬

sunshinesupermum · 13/01/2024 19:29

Try Uniqlo. DP can't wear wool but they do a cotton mix thermal long sleeve vest.
Funnily enough I've taken to wearing an M & S acrylic long sleeve fine knit sweater as a base layer (£17.50 at M&S or much cheaper brand new on Vinted) I have one in cream and another in pale grey and worn underneath another top feel very toasty.

Gerwurtztraminer · 13/01/2024 19:36

I've got the Decathlon ones and really like them. Go up a size if you have larger boobs.

Also you don't have to have specialised 'base layers'. Uniqlo do really nice merino jumpers and one in smaller size (they tend to be a bit roomy) would do the same job.

@isthewashingdryyet is right you can wear one for a week and it won't smell, I've gone much longer when hiking and not at all whiffy, unlike the synthetics.

menopausalmare · 13/01/2024 19:39

In the sales, I bought my cycling partner the merino top and bottoms from mountain warehouse - he seems happy with them but they were £70 together.

QueenMabby · 13/01/2024 19:45

Try the COS merino one. It says it's a top but really it's a base layer. It even has thumb holes! I have one in navy and I love it. Might get a second one in this off-white:

QueenMabby · 13/01/2024 19:45

Sorry. Meant to say they are £45. So not very cheap but not the £80+ either.

BrennieGirl · 13/01/2024 20:29

I got a merino base layer last week from sports direct reduced from €120 to €36.

BrownTableMat · 13/01/2024 20:33

I’d also say that while I prefer natural fibres, for everyday I live in the Uniqlo heattech or heattech extra warm and on colder days the marks and Spencer’s heatgen plus ones and find all of those warm and not sweaty. I only wear the silk ones on warmer days and the merino ones when it’s really really cold. And I often work outside or in minimally heated buildings in winter.

Pinkballetfrog · 13/01/2024 20:48

Thank you for all of the replies. I am plus size 20 so decathlon doesn't have what I am looking for in my size.

I will keep looking.

I might get a men's top.

I bought my son some from mountain warehouse today, don't think they are 100% Merino but are a merino blend. Really good price in the sale.

lljkk · 13/01/2024 22:35

On Ebay, BNWT, £25 with postage, size 22, search for "Mountain Warehouse Women's Thermal Base Layer Ladies Lightweight Merino Top"

ScribeSev · 13/01/2024 22:51

Base layers need to wick away your sweat so the best ones are specifically designed to do that

Moier · 13/01/2024 23:00

Try a motorcycle clothing shop.
They do what you're looking for.

Snowydaysfaraway · 13/01/2024 23:18

Dh gets his stuff from the army surplus store in town..

Aldi base layers are fab.

Yes they are, but they were on sale over a month ago and won't be back until the end of this year.

Watch out for mixed fibres. Some say merino wool, but are not 100%

Try charity shops for second hand woolly jumpers.

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 14/01/2024 09:43

Try the middle of Lidl. Ours has lots of this stuff at the moment

AHG123 · 16/01/2024 18:08

I wear M&S thermal long sleeve vest over their sleeveless vests.
Wear a hat!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/01/2024 19:13

greenacrylicpaint · 16/01/2024 19:20

they wash well, dry quickly. don't smell after a few wears.

Greyscale1 · 16/01/2024 19:25
