Siatica any suggestions on relief?

Im in agongy, deep dull pain lower back and now dull pain going down one lwg.

Any suggestions on how to relieve the pain?

Long acting ibuprofen & gentle exercise if you can bear it.

Hot bath to relieve pain. Definitely exercise, look up sciatica exercises on you tube.

The only real relief I got was from physio exercises. You will find plenty online. It can take a few weeks to feel the benefits though. In the meantime hot water bottle on back or warm bath. Ibuprofen and paracetamol. Cocodamol instead of paracetamol at night as it might help you sleep as well.

I had this last summer. A combination of cocodamol and hot water bottles managed the pain temporarily somewhat but acupuncture (needles and cupping) actually resolved the problem. It took a few sessions but I haven't had a flare up since.

Also helped the frozen shoulder I'd been struggling with for 18 months.

Sorry you're suffering, it is debilitating.

I got a prescription specifically for nerve pain, sorry I can't remember the name. But generic painkillers like cocodamol didn't touch it.

Physio, as others have said, and look up exercises. A half hour walk before breakfast to get moving.

I'd say be careful of hot baths - I got in one and the position I was in was excruciating, I thought I wouldn't manage to get out again!

Look at your sleeping position - I found a contoured pillow helps, as does sleeping on my side with a pillow between my knees.

Don't do any exercises without seeing a physio and preferably after a scan. There are so many fitness influencers making money from 'cure your sciatica' type videos that suggest exercises that can exacerbate lower back problems.

Hot water bottle is best, sit with lots of lumbar support, take ibuprofen until you can get to the gp. I find naproxen best but you can also ask for tramadol or high strength co-codamol. A coccyx cushion can also take pressure off your lower back.

Get to a physio (not an osteo or chiro) who uses their hands on you, not just suggests at home exercises.

Ice pack for 20 mins, then hot water bottles. Keep the kettle in your bedroom. Then ibuprofen or naproxen and prescription cocodamol. Once this acute period has passed, get moving as much as possible. Then see physio for exercises. They say MRI not necessary as they just treat symptoms, but I wanted to know what had happened. It will pass.

Lie on your tummy with your chest propped up on some cushions. Your spine should curve the opposite way to when you bend over.

Works a treat!

Strongest pain relief you can find.
Elevate your leg.
Pillow between legs.
But honestly, the only thing that helped was an operation because of a bulging disc.
If it persists, get an MRI to see if it's a bulging disc.

I had an mri that showed one of my vertebrae was impacting on my nerve. I tried physio, various pain killers, pain clinic etc nothing really worked at all. The pain was unbearable. I had a steroid injection in my spine about six months ago which did help but didn't clear it. They gave me another injection last week and that has given me some relief (they don't know how long it will last). The next step is to shave some of my vertebrae off so it doesn't catch my nerve.

If I could give you any advice it would be to get an mri ASAP so you know what is happening. Try different pain killers. Do the physio exercises (if they do help and for some they do, it's the least intrusive option).

This can make it a lot worse because it puts pressure on the lower back and narrows the space for the nerves.

Hot water bottle and whatever anti inflammatory medicine that works for you.

And then walk as much as you can, it was the only thing that gave me relief. Also if you can get a foam roller and look up exercises on YouTube.

I hope it eases up, it's a nasty pain.

Flattening out the spinal curve - back on floor, thighs at 90 degrees (straight up), knees bent to 90 and supported, such as on the sofa.

For some people, bending forward is painful. For others, extending your back (as in the cobra position) is painful. It depends which disc / nerve is affected. Different exercises will work depending on what is causing the issue. A physio will give personalised advice and following YouTube videos can be risky.

If you start doing an exercise and it makes the pain worse, don't do it. When I first got sciatica, I saw that lots of videos recommended doing the cobra. I found this excruciating. Anything that extends my back backwards seems to inflame things..so listening to your body is important.
