Psoriasis on scalp

Anything that can actually get rid of this? Tried gels and shampoo from GP but have a constant plume of white flakes coming off my head which is embarrassing 😳

Nothing worked for me other than proper medication (methotrexate initially, now biologics) but I do also have PsA so went via rheumatology rather than dermatology (which I understand has longer waiting lists)

Is biologics ok on the liver ? Methotrexate is pretty horrible on the body, but of a balance I guess

like others, selenium based shampoos work wel, but I found they thinned my hair. Currently using sls free, and dealing with the low to mid waves coming and going. I have so much crap going on with me that I’ve not the energy to add my scalp to the list of things to remember at the gp.

Luck to all, though. Scalp psoriasis is horrid.

Faith in nature shampoo and once a week dunking my head in bath with oilatum oil. Coconut oil overnight also helps.

@FloofCloud I've been on various for 10 years and never had an effect on my liver; they generally don't have any side effects at all. I couldn't tolerate methotrexate and it made my liver do all sorts of things but I've never had a problem since coming off it.

You can get calcipotriol in a liquid solution (as opposed to ointment) form that you apply twice a day. Very effective. Needs GP prescription in the UK.

When people say that a certain shampoo "works" for them what does that mean? E.g. a completely clear scalp?
Mine has never been clear for as long as I've had it (30-ish years, I think), and it doesn't ever really change unless I used a "normal" shampoo in which case I would scratch it until it bled 😔
I use T gel which irritates it the least, but I always have plaques which feel like they cover most of my scalp.

HashBrownandBeans · 14/01/2024 12:49

I’ve had this for twenty years and what works changes every few years, I have to mix it up a bit. Currently body shop ginger shampoo is working and has done for approx two years

Betnovate scalp solution on prescription. It goes on dry hair and smells very strong for a minute or two but then dries and completely fixes it for me. Best stuff ever.

Second this! The only thing that has ever worked for me

User1706 · 14/01/2024 13:56

Keratase sensitive shampoo (grey bottle) worked for me. You only need a very small amount and it only has a light fragrance so not overwhelming. My flakes went after a few days.

At the minute yes for DS with selsun - but as other said pervious things worked for a bit and stopped though most of those it was more under control than entirely clear.

Amla oil is a good remedy for flaking scalps. It can be applied to the scalp directly, or you can use product with it in. Avoid anything fragranced or with colour added in, this will just make it worse. I have been using a Strengthening Amla shampoo bar from Arcade Skincare. It is for sensitive skin and doesn't have sulphates etc. in it. But it seems to be helping with my scalp scales.

Enterthewolves · 17/01/2024 09:24

Original T-Gel - works on the areas behind/in my ears as well. I use it once/twice a week and faith nature in between. It is never totally clear but isn’t itchy and I can wear black tops!

Nothing will 'get rid of it' as it's an autoimmune condition. However Capasal shampoo helps relieve it. It has not just coal tar but Salicylic acid also which is proven to help. Farrrrrr better than anything by head & shoulders

DogLover24 · 17/01/2024 09:35

Capasal used to be prescribed by GP but NHS cuts meant that I now have to buy it.
