Canary Islands without package/all inclusive

AntiHop · 13/01/2024 13:07

Dh and I and two kids want a warmish holiday in Feb so considering canary islands.

We've never done an all inclusive before and would prefer to stick to our usual style of Airbnb then organising our own activities and eating out an restaurants.

Any suggestions of the best area of the canaries for this kind of set up? We've never been there before.

We went to Lanzarote in October and did Airbnb and it worked out great. Not sure how warm it'll be in Feb. But easy to get around, eat out, loads to do, great beaches.

Jane McDonald is visiting all the Canary islands on her programme ( Fri 9pm chanel 5) she's done two already( Teneriffe and Grand Canaria) Feuterventura next Fri then Lanzarote.. try it on catch up.
We go to Lanzarote 3 times a year and Feuterventura once a year.. been going to Lanzarote for 20 plus years..
Depends how old kids are and what they're in to.
We go to Playa Blanca .. it's a very spread out quiet resort with 3 great beaches and a water park.
Costa Teguise has a great water park and fabulous beaches and everything centred around a music/ restaurant Square.. Perto del Carmen is the biggest and busiest resort with loads of shops / restaurants along a strip .. with a zoo/ water park near by.. I'd suggest hiring a car ftom the airport which ever place you choose via Autoreisen.. it's a Canarian company.. the cheapest.. book on line pay at airport on debit card and no hidden extras with free cancellation.
You can also get the ferry to Feuterventura from Playa Blanca.
There is trips up to the volcanoes ( amazing landscape and volcano show).
We always stay in a villa with own pool or sometimes a communal pool.
There are many supermarkets ( Spar and Hyperdio) with everything you could want.. including fresh baked bread and delicious deli selection.
Can't comment on Grand Canaria or Tenneriffe) .

Fuerteventura, Correlejo, lots to do and will be warm. We love it there.

Moier · 13/01/2024 22:50

We book flights with jet2 and accommodation with Booking.com.
Plenty of cheap villas.
Also Apartments that aren't big hotels.
In Lanzarote and Feuterventura you will never see any high rise building ,/ hotels.. it's against the law.. a sculpture/ artist called Ceaser Manriques ( his underground house is well worth a visit .. Google him) made a pact with the mayor.. for exchange of money to promise not to build high rise and all the houses in Lanzarote must be painted white. You cam see his sculptures all over the Island.

We go to Gran Canaria in Jan/Feb and have found Puerto Rico / Amadores area is always nice, known to be the sunniest side and least amount of wind.
Some fab hotels in that area some with infinity pool views and views of Amadores beach. Gloria Palace is great for views and fabulous sunsets but there are plenty of other hotels around just as good. 👍🏼

We did Tenerife over Xmas with our kids in a villa. The weather was fantastic, 25/26 during the day and 19 at night. We stayed in Los Christianos and all had a great time.

We have also done Lanzarote in February the weather was good but they said we were lucky and it had been the warmest in 30 years - love Peurto del Carmen, not keen on Costa Teguise it was super windy in April.

We have also done Corralejo in Feurteventura in April and It was super windy.

I'd defo go for Tenerife.

Ejismyf · 13/01/2024 23:12

Just to add we went to Las Americas three of the nights and it was great so it would be a good area too, Costa Adeje is apparently nice too and a bit quieter than the other two areas.

Windmill34 · 13/01/2024 23:17

You can book your flights and find hotels/apartment online yourself booking direct

we did this in Lazarote

booked flights online
booked apartments , Fariones puerto del carmen direct

there is a breeze in the day which is nice, at night time you need a cardigan thou windy

GrandTheftWalrus · 13/01/2024 23:19

We went to lanzarote in Feb 2023. We were self catering though so a package unfortunately. However the weather was a bit hit and miss. I got burnt some days and it was cooler other days. I just wore a light cardigan at night and my DDs were in the pool. That was Puerto del Carmen.

2chocolateoranges · 13/01/2024 23:23

We have been to Puerto del carmen twice last year . We stayed in Aqua suites, b&b , stunning hotel 5 star, 10 min walk to strip! Then we stayed in Rui Paraisio All Inclusive which had plenty day and evening entertainment, great food and amazing staff, approx 15 min walk to strip.

can highly recommend both hotels.

we are looking for a new resort to try but can’t decide between Costa Teguise or Playa Blanca.

Why are people suggesting what the OP didn't ask for?
She doesn't want Hotels.

Moier · 13/01/2024 23:37

Also all the islands are windy.. believe me if you didn't have it.. it would be too hot.
They are tiny islands in the middle of the Atlantic...
But please don't do what many do and stay in the resort.. and think that is it..
Hire a car and explore.. well worth it..

Puerto del carmen, lanzarote. Stay in any of the villas in los mojones-book through vrbo. They all have heated pools and high walls so wind is less of an issue.

Tbf a self catering holiday is kinda like an airbnb. Yes it's in a "resort" but no entertainment and cook for yourself. Or like we done, 1 night cooking then next night out in a restaurant.

She doesn't want Hotels.

Because she said she would prefer.

that tells me she’s open to other suggestions rather than a definite of wanting Airbnb.

we always go self catering but this year tried 2 hotels which were amazing. We can change our minds depending on recommendations.

El Cotillo in Fuerteventura is nice, Corralejo OK. Beaches all beautiful.

In Tenerife, El Medano was the best place I found in the south on the coast (which is where you'll probably want to be due to weather). There are some genuine very cheap local bars there if you walk back from the seafront and the beach is nice enough. The villages in the mountains (Granadilla de Abona is where I've stayed) are pretty much unspoilt, quiet, very few English speaking tourists, but will prob be a bit chilly/foggy - you can bus down to the warmer coast easily though.
