To think my 'sciatica' was mis diagnosed

And to wonder what else could cause lower back pain? I don't and never have had the typical symptoms eg buttock or leg pain. I've had a MRI on at least six occasions and just been told I have 'general wear and tear' on my disks ( discs?). I tried to challenge thos with the doctor once and was informed it was definitely sciatica. Thoughts?

What are your actual symptoms that led to the MRI? If you don’t have any radicular pain then you don’t have sciatica

I was diagnosed with sciatica in 2005 when I was 27. Over the years the pain has changed and worsened and is mainly in my legs now and when I have a flare up it also kicks my lower back off. I have fibromyalgia. Diagnosed November 2018 at a private hospital.

I'm starting to think Dr google, might be better at diagnosing yourself than most doctor's.

Back pain can often be referred from elsewhere. I have hip problems and often feel the pain in my back with sciatica like symptoms. But I don't have sciatica. I think sciatica is the go to diagnosis and is often wrong.

I agree with you (not as a doctor, but as a fellow back pain sufferer). If the sciatic nerve isn’t causing buttock or leg pain, I don’t know why it would be sciatica.

As a temporary relief I highly recommend a tens machine. I got one this week and it works miracles as a pain killer. It doesn’t cure it as the pain returns when the timer runs out, but it is a Godsend as a drug-free break from the agony.

I hope that you get a proper diagnosis!

I have mid to lower back pain. I have bought a tens machine. They are best used at home though, I find

I spent 10 years complaining to doctors about back pain, struggling to keep my job and look after my kids. Emigrated and within 1 year of using foreign health system was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. Now take bi weekly injections and pain free.

I have similar pain, could have been sciatica but no pain down the leg. Didn't have any scans etc. Chiropractor is helping masses and says it's facet joint related. Worth a try?

Tiredallthetimeneedsleep · 26/01/2024 17:14

Off to Google ankylosing spondylitis and facet
