Court case coming up, im a witness

September 2021 my next door neighbour was beaten up by a random thug known to our village. He suffered a fractured jaw in 2 places, I was a witness but didnt see exactly what happened as ran inside to get my phone to ring 999.
Turns out the suspect had caused those injures and ran off (with his local friends watching on..)
I see these people several times a week and the court case is in february. I am petrified to go to court as a witness, I also cant completely remember what happened over 2 years ago but they said I can read my statement.
Does anyone have any experience of this?

Yes. You'll get to read your statement and they should have asked you if you wanted special measures such as a screen while you give your evidence at court.
Is it at crown court or magistrates court?
Go on the website and there will be witness information.
Crown court will usually have a nice victim/witness care area where they'll take you through everything.

Sorry, I can see it's a GBH, so it will be at crown court.

Crown court.
I hope he gets done for it as its not the first time.
My neighbours have been invited to go and visit the court end of jan and said I can go too so will do that just to see the set up.
Just seems so scary!

I've done something very similar, the court were all very understanding. Ask for the screen if they don't offer it. It's important that you do this.

Snowdays23 · 10/01/2024 22:59

We have asked for the screen. Thank you x

Deep breath, give yourself time and answer the questions asked of you only.
You'll see the barristers pause and take their time, so you will be afforded this. It's not as dramatic or as hostile as you see on the TV. The barristers want the jury on their side, so they won't be hostile.
The court visit is a great idea.
