Having a clue when selling jewellery

Hi
I have some jewellery gifted after my mum's death. I have worked out what to keep for sentimental reasons.

The rest I would like to sell. Probably use that money for some charitable causes, perhaps a tree in her name etc

However, I have no clue if this jewellery is worth anything! No idea of gold caratage, if any stones are real etc....

How on earth do I ensure I get a proper price for them?

Thanks so much!

A jeweller would appraise and value them for a fee. Try a local independent.

Thanks. I am guessing some would get melted down, I have some jewellery I would probably also sort at same time
I also didn't mention some is broken
Would they also look at those?

I would imagine so. I think our local guy charges a fee based around a percentage of the total valuation. Good luck with sorting yours 👍

With jewellery the thing is the valuation for insurance won’t be close to what you’d get selling. I had a diamond ring. Insurance valuation was £3000. Took it to reputable jewellers in Edinburgh and London. The most I was offered for it was £275.

My local jeweller does a free valuation day each month, with a visiting jewellery valuer. They have been happy to give me a free valuation for about ten items at a time; this isn't a written insurance valuation, which they obviously charge for, but gives an accurate picture of the current value. I think quite a few jewellers do similar schemes if you look around.

Ours was a valuation for the solicitors administering an estate, so an actual value rather than insurance valuation.
