Did anyone have normal sleep in pregnancy?

Just wondering, a few people I know had insomnia at some point and hoping I’m one of the lucky ones!

Yep, never any problems sleeping here :)

DuploTrain · 10/01/2024 09:40

How far along are you?

I slept okay until about 34 weeks and after that I get woken up constantly by vigorous kicking and have to change position and then need a wee.

I get back to sleep okay, so I wouldn’t say it’s insomnia, it’s that I’m being physically disturbed rather than struggling to fall asleep.

AnneLovesGilbert · 10/01/2024 09:40

No. Sorry. Woke needing to wee and with nausea from very early on, then got heartburn every time I lay down (get omeprazole if that happens, it helps!), then had achy hips and back and the final trimester was plagued by pointless insomnia.

If it’s any consolation I’ve slept better both times once I’d had the baby and at least there’s a point to being awake when you have your baby to look after. I never found being up with a newborn difficult.

First trimester here and I’m falling asleep so early on an evening then wide awake for hours in the middle of the night! Hoping it passes soon!

Nope I had terrible insomnia, leg pains / cramps and generally woke up so uncomfortable however a friend had absolutely none of this and couldn't understand the fuss I made

Bundeena · 10/01/2024 21:40

Had problems mainly in last 10 weeks or so - itchy skin in evening and constantly needing to pee made it hard to fall asleep. Then I'd usually need the toilet at least once during night. Only had insomnia on a few nights though. I thought I was tired at the time.....but once I had a newborn I had a whole other perspective 😂

Yazoop · 10/01/2024 21:48

I’ve found sleep a bit fitful - need to get up to wee once a night now plus get achy hips (trying to train myself to sleep on my sides rather than on my back). I’m only 13 weeks so expecting it might get worse!

Ozgirl75 · 10/01/2024 21:51

It was a while ago for me but my sleep was normal apart from two things……I would have orgasms in my sleep all the time which was awesome ☺️
And occasionally I would wake up utterly utterly frozen to the bone, shivering uncontrollably and had to have my DH just hold me really close and tightly in the duvet until I woke up.
Apart from that, fine.

I would honestly enjoy sleeping on your back while you can. It doesn’t get easier with training! Enjoy the next few months of back sleeping while you can, there’s no point suffering before you have to.

Once I made the switch to side sleeping I put one pillow in front of me and one behind me to stop myself rolling over.

BurbageBrook · 10/01/2024 21:58

I slept fine till the third trimester when I was woken hourly by needing to pee!

Nejnej · 10/01/2024 22:17

I never had any major issues - waking to pee and fidget about in the third trimester but no insomnia or major disruption :)

LessonsLearnedInLife · 10/01/2024 22:21

I never had many problems, near the end of my pregnancies I couldn’t really get comfy as I sleep on my stomach and needing to wee. I also had really weird bad dreams near the end too.

My worst dreams were when I had tiny babies. I guess I was sleeping less deeply but in my dreams I was always doing things like getting on the bus and realising I’d left the baby at home. Awful.

Me too! I used to dream I’d left my children at home alone, as in tiny a babies and I was rushing to get back. I had the oddest dreams back then and it was horrible.

Ozgirl75 · 11/01/2024 14:12

@LessonsLearnedInLife awful! Yes I’d have those terrible dreams where I was trying to get back to my baby and was thwarted by loads of random things. Or I’d dream that they rolled to the bottom of the bed and I lost them under the cover. I’m sure it was my body’s way of showing me all the terrible things that could happen to prevent them from happening.

thecatsthecats · 11/01/2024 14:15

Horrible insomnia. A few days off work, and generally felt like death.

Lots of ridiculously unhelpful comments about "just you wait" on the sleep front, but all of my antenatal group are in agreement that newborn waking is a million times easier than pregnancy insomnia.

Curtainpoles · 11/01/2024 14:17

I slept fine in both my pregnancies, apart from a couple of weeks with my second baby when I was nearing the end and there was a heatwave. I don't think I'd have slept well even if I wasn't pregnant, but the pregnancy made it worse as I felt so enormous and bloated and sweaty!
I did get the Post-birth nightmares where I would dream the baby was missing or crying and wake up in a panic - only to find them sleeping safe and sound!

TheTwirlyPoos · 11/01/2024 14:18

Slept really well throughout. Only thing that kept me awake was a stupidly hot summer (2018)

Spookyxmama · 11/01/2024 14:21

30 weeks here and struggle to stay asleep, my back and pelvis are really painful so I end up switching sides atleast 20 times a night so my sleep isn't great at all. I cannot WAIT to sleep on my back 😄

mindutopia · 11/01/2024 16:55

My sleep was fine in pregnancy, albeit a bit uncomfortable towards the end. I ordinarily have terrible insomnia, but I was actually quite tired when pregnant and generally slept great.

Mel2023 · 11/01/2024 17:11

Sleep was fine. I was way more tired than usual in fact and slept way too much to the point that it was having a real impact on my day to day life. No insomnia at all. However, towards the end I was up a lot in the night to pee, and as you’re supposed to sleep on your side I’d wake up with hip pain on the side I was laying on and would have to get up and move about for a bit/switch positions etc. All very annoying and kept me awake but it wasn’t insomnia and I went back to sleep no problem.

tryingforbaba · 11/01/2024 18:47

Yes completely normal. In fact I slept amazingly in pregnancy

Zippedydoodahday · 11/01/2024 19:24

No issues at all here.
