Doesn't regret it although still needs glasses for age related presbyopia.

He is delighted not to need contacts after many years of daily wear.

Hoping for no glasses. Currently have lenses , but can read if I don't have my lenses in.

Dh was initially very disappointed in needing reading glasses but has got over it. He still thinks it was worth it

I don’t need reading glasses without my lenses either. Does that mean if you have a lens replacement you wouldn’t need anything???

Mischance · 10/01/2024 16:23

I had lens replacements - for cataract, but it's the same surgery. I opted for distance lenses, having been very myopic all my life. No problems - had them both done at the same time. Can drive fine.

But like another poster I need reading glasses - in fact I wear varifocals as I can't be arsed to keep taking glasses on and off.

I was going to recommend Spa Medica who have branches in Birmingham and Derby as I've have friends who recommend them. However, they might only do cataract surgery. Worth giving them a call though.
On the other hand, ask your optician about 'mono vision' with your contact lenses. It's where they under correct your weakest eye so you can see distances and still read. I've done this for many years.

I would have it at your prescription and age, you’ll get cataracts soonish anyway.
You won’t be able to read close too unless you have one eye under corrected or have a multifocal implant - these are very similar to multifical contact lenses.

try both one eye being under corrected or a multifocal contact lens before you go for the consultation. Just book in with your optician.

tbh because it’s basically cataract surgery, it’s very straightforward. Is there a refractive surgery place near you you were considering. Gold standard would probably be Moorfields.

I have never heard of this.
Considered lazer surgery for years, but didn't bother.
I am 49 with -6.5 in both eyes.
I can read close up without glasses, but think I might end up with varifocals soon.
Any idea of the cost?

dazzlingdeborahrose · 10/01/2024 23:26

I had lens replacements a couple of years ago. My vision was -15 with quite severe astigmatism. We chose to correct the distance vision and as much of the astigmatism as we could. Now I have perfect distance/general vision but need reading glasses which is not a problem. If my prescription hadn't been so complex I could have had multifocal lens which would have meant no reading glasses. I'm in the north east so can't recommend a surgeon in your area but the surgery was life changing for me.
