What’s your longest wait for car rescue services?

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 09/01/2024 18:41

Broke down back of 3. Could not get onto rac app as I had a previous account. I hadn’t renewed and bought with clubcard points instead. I did get through on phone at four. Anyway here I am sat at side of dual carriageway, apparently a high priority. With an eta that keeps changing but is currently up to 22:15.

Tell me your sad stories of woeful rescues and keep me entertained. Please!

13 hours with RAC!! But, I'm sure it'll be much quicker if you're stranded and on your own OP. Fortunately I was nearly home, so husband was able to collect me and I just left a note on my car. I broke down at 6pm, they called me at 1am to say they would get to me by 8am. Suffice to say, I will not be renewing with them when cover runs out!

UsernameChangerRanger · 09/01/2024 18:51

12 hours, AA as a solo female.

OP if you're in an unsafe position on a dual carriageway call the police for assistance.

Riseandshinee · 09/01/2024 18:53

We were stuck over 12 hours with the AA

Well that was terrifying half on a live lane and then the battery was dying so hazards were getting dimmer. I was about to call 999 when a road police officer arrived and he sat behind me with blues on , he was able to hurry things along with the local company the RAC passed the job along to so car is at the garage and I am home.

I am a bit unimpressed as local guy was saying I’m ten miles from him and he could of done it hours ago.

I don’t think I’ll be renewing but AA doesn’t sound any better to be fair.

I was waiting for 7 hours last year…until 3am! I was a lone female & terrified. That was with RAC.

Just12345 · 09/01/2024 20:59

I'm so glad to see your update that your home. I have heard nothing but long waits lately. We were told 8 hours after an accident on the m25 where a car hit us we were 1 miles from our junction. Our car wouldn't move out of park so couldn't move it . The guy who hit us his breakdown arrived after an hour and I think he felt sorry for us so he managed to get our car out of park and we could get home where we could wait in the warm

Green Flag are meant to be better than the AA and RAC

8hrs (RAC) in the cold and rain, thankfully I wasn’t on the motorway and had to got a safe place but it was freezing, dh actually came to me to let me sit in his car as it was bloody freezing and dark.

They eventually sent a 3rd party rescue truck at 1am.

however from friends I know RAC aren’t any better but I feel a car rescue policy is a must… just in case.

Tried them before RAC and they weren’t much help either.

30 hours in early Dec with a baby and toddler in the car! Luckily from the off it was obvious they were going to be useless so we gave up and just left the car (managed to get it off the blind bend on a country road it was blocking). They kept just pushing their estimated arrival time back and back at first, then around 12 hours later they said they'd passed the job on to a local partner. Updates through the live tracking they gave us just said local partner will be with you by X time. Which passed. And continued to happen until 30h (from original call) later the driver rocks up and says that they'd only just been passed the job. Imagine if we'd waited with the car Shock. AA afterwards said it had been recorded as a pick up from home not an accident hence delay Hmm

@UsernameChangerRanger I wouldn't recommend Green Flag, once had to be towed from Lancaster to Bristol and had to have five different tow trucks as they kept going out of area and so we had to transfer to whoever dealt with that area. Took about 9h to get home with a small very angry dog*

*Dog not Green Flag's fault, a friend's 18yo Westie who did not like the tow truck changeovers!

40 minutes. Green flag.
We were at home and they were very apologetic for taking so long.

The other times they were less than half an hour so I'll stick with Green Flag.

christmasbunny · 09/01/2024 21:33

Green flag were with us within the hour and we were safe in a supermarket car park in the middle of the day with no vulnerable passengers. I was very impressed !

Muchtoomuchtodo · 09/01/2024 21:33

i’ve not had to use them (touch wood) but we’ve got cover with Start Rescue.

we’ve also got cover through our bank account and they came out within 2 hours when I last needed them a couple of years ago but I realised that this cover didn’t include getting us and the car home if needed so I took out the policy with start.

HellsToilet · 09/01/2024 22:02

RAC left my elderly parents for 9 hours during a heatwave, kept telling them they were a priority and someone was on the way but actually cancelled their call out 3 times! In the end they sent an independent operator who said he had been free all day so could have been there within minutes.

BizzyMcWhizzFace · 09/01/2024 22:10

I'm with Start Rescue. Had to call them out a few times over the years. Flat battery at home - someone there within the hour but couldn't pop the boot because the key didn't work and the battery was flat for the central locking. 2 hours later the right person came with the right equipment. So 3 hours total, but I was at home.

The most recent was 90 minutes when I had a blow out on a country road. Apparently 20+ minutes was him looking for my car because the app recorded me in the wrong place. But for £40/year I've been happy with them.

hellsBells246 · 09/01/2024 22:46

Last week! 9 hours to mechanic arriving with RAC. But then the mechanic couldn't fix the car so had to arrange for a tow truck: it arrived 22 hours after our call for help!! Fucking ridiculous.

hellsBells246 · 09/01/2024 22:48

Our tow truck mechanic recommended Green Flag. We're going to change to them. RAC is just shit.

cariadlet · 09/01/2024 22:56

My Mum waited for a couple of hours for Green Flag. They messaged that it would be another couple of hours so she phoned my BIL to fetch her.

Lone female, in her 80s, not brilliant health, engine packed in so no heating and the car was freezing cold, on a main road and not safe to get out.

She joined the AA the next day.

crackofdoom · 09/01/2024 23:19

I have heard so many horror stories about the RAC 🙄

I guess my longest wait was about 4 hours for the AA, safely pulled over in a petrol station. Although I had a toddler with me, so it seemed like 40 😬

I used to be a frequent flyer with breakdown services, usually independent ones as I used to buy breakdown cover through my insurance. All the drivers said that Green Flag was the best of the nationwide services.

Consequently, I've been with Green Flag for years, but haven't had to call them out much. I did lock myself out of my van in a pitch black pub car park at midnight in rural Devon last year (yes I was drunk. Was intending to sleep in the van rather than drive it anywhere), and it took 7 hours for Green Flag's subcontracted locksmith to get to me. But I considered that reasonable given the circumstances. Luckily a friend let me sleep in his van.
