8 day periods?

Are 8 day periods normal?
I’ve just finished my period on day 8.
I do have irregular periods but the period normally lasts about 5/6 days never had one this long ever. I’ve been getting the odd shooting pain but that comes and goes random. This is what my cycle normally looks like …

have You had the irregular periods investigated? I have pcos and endo and my normal is heavy, long, irregular periods sometimes over 7 days. As this is different to your normal might be worth asking about if it happens again.

How old are you?

Lauren8642 · 09/01/2024 20:46

@DustyLee123 I’m 25, 26 in April

@Takeshi my periods arnt heavy if anything I would say theyre quite normal/ lighter side. I went to the doctors back in July last year had blood test and ultrasound both came back normal. Got referred to a gynocologist (I also have painful sex since I had my daughter in April 2021) and was the worst appointment of my life got told that some people just have irregular periods and the only way to control it is the pill. And for the sex got told to use lube and try foreplay. (I’m 25 this was a 50 odd year old man telling me this) didn’t ask me where the pain was or anything on my notes from the doctor it mentions left adnexal bulkiness and he didn’t look into that. I complained to PALS got an appointment for 6th of Feb then they cancelled it so now back on waiting list.

Mine have always been around 10 days long, extremely regular.

8 days is definitely in the normal zone

Mumoftwo1312 · 09/01/2024 20:53

The painful sex thing isn't normal ofc (sorry to hear about that and the awful dr) but I wouldn't say 8 day periods are strange on their own

Lauren8642 · 09/01/2024 21:15

@Mumoftwo1312 thank you, I’m hoping it’s just a random one off thing! Must be awful having 10 day long ones

Mine got much longer after having children.

But you have my sympathies for the male gyane mansplaining. I'm 45 and currently looking for a private gynae and they are all men in their late 50s. And they all talk down to you and just don't listen.

I don't get it. How can they possibly know what things feel like to a woman.

Look up Kelly Casperson (American gynae) on podcasts. She has a podcast called 'you are not broken'. I wish I'd had the kind of knowledge she shares when I was your age.

Sexual health ( I don't mean stds) how to have good sex, what's normal, what can be fixed. So much.

Lauren8642 · 09/01/2024 21:41

@Leftoversgalore ill definitely look her up! I’ve asked for a female gynaecologist but there’s only 1 in my hospital so that means the wait time is even longer.
I came out the appointment so upset I’ve never felt so little in my life. It took me a lot to bring myself to make an appointment aswell. We’re ttc and not been successful so far and hoping it’s not a deeper problem. Hope you find someone that wolll listen!

Oh honestly I sympathise. I saw one last year who was late 50s, im 45. It was private and he was a colleague of a a friend in the same area.

I walked out feeling totally patronised. In his letter he said he would be happy to see me again. I was so upset, there's no way I'm going back to him!

Some consultants just dont listen or consider that you might be nervous and are already upset.

Have you seen a pelvic physio? They can help with pain with sex, at your age it's likely to be to do with an over tight pelvic floor. You can see them privately, they cost about £80 for an app, and they can give you loads of advice.

They do a lot of post natal support for new mums, usually women and you generally get an hour to chat in your first appointment.

I can't imagine the NHS ones have as much time.

@Leftoversgalore Ive not seen a pelvic physio I’ve just read about it and they look at c - section scaring which I had a c section with my daughter so it would be interesting for them to look at my scar aswell. I’ll have a look more into it and try to find somewhere. Thank you

update - I thought I finished yesterday on day 8 but been spotting today a bit on a pad and when I wipe, don’t know if to class this as my period or what. God knows what’s happening to my body?
