The carnivore diet

Does anyone know much about it?
It's eating meat and nothing else.
I think it sounds awful but by all accounts people on these diets are thriving. I don't understand it. Aren't we meant to have fibre, vitamins and so on?

Not necessarily. As with all things, people are different. Some will thrive on carnivore and some will do better on a plant based diet.

I'm diabetic so carnivore is perfect for me. My dh tried plant based and his stomach and guts were horrendous. We both fare better health wise on a carnivore or near carnivore diet.

I doubt anyone actually eats a fully meat diet. They'll be shoving big bowls of pasta down there throats in secret.

@Gobolina thanks for your response. I'm glad it's working for you and this is what I've been hearing.
Don't you get constipated though? And what about having good levels of vitamin c? And other nutrients that come from fruit and veg?

I'm still trying to work up to going keto as I think I'll really benefit from that then I came across the carnivore diet. It seems so bizarre

@UnfunnyJester I strongly don't recommend it. we are omnivores, not carnivores. there are no longer term studies, or even solid short term studies on the effects of these fad diets (this includes keto). People with no understanding of actual human physiology or biochemistry reccommend these diets when really what everyone needs is unprocessed home cooked balanced meals containing all the different food groups in moderate amounts and lots and lots of exercise. even a chocolate bar or bag of crisps now and then is fine. no extreme, dangerous diets needed.

UnfunnyJester · 09/01/2024 00:52

@therealcookiemonster Oh don't worry, I'm not even tempted. There's no way I'd enjoy it. I just came across and was confused by it.

I do need to cut carbs though as I know I eat waaay to many.

I take vitamins. I don't eat fully carnivore. We eat meat, poultry, fish, seafood, cheese, eggs, butter. We do eat veg and salad, but will be largely phasing those out for a while, we'll still eat onion, garlic, herbs & spices. Maybe we will sometimes eat a small amount of veg but the majority of our diet will be carnivore. We aren't fanatical about it. It's about eating to get rid of inflammation, for us, and to keep blood glucose lower and stable.

I don't get constipated. I might go to the toilet less, but that's because I eat less filler foods and food that turns into or produces waste from my body. Pretty much most of what I eat, is used, so there's less waste.

As a pp said, part of the way we eat is to try to only eat whole foods, homemade and that give us energy rather than insulin resistance. Wheat, corn, grains all dont really agree with us. My dh can eat some, but I need to swerve them completely.

I need to go quite carnivore for a while to get my bg back under control. I've not been eating correctly and it's higher than it should be.

Thanks @Gobolina sounds like you're doing well.

Thanks, its early days but I started cutting out the crap the day after boxing day but obviously there was still a few things to be eaten up, so its been a bit of a soft start here and there. Since yesterday though I've been back on it properly. We'll eat the veg we have left in and then stick to animal products for a while.

Every so often though I crave a fresh salad so I will eat that when I want it. Some people get fanatical and obsessive, and only eat meat, salt & water but I want to make lifelong habit changes so I think intuitive eating is better for me. Just meat, salt & water is not sustainable imo.

Decades ago my Dm used to talk about the ‘stone age’ diet, which was just meat, but including a good proportion of meat fat, which would never do for me.

Abhannmor · 02/04/2024 19:12

The carnivore exponents recommend eating the fat for energy though?
I'm not sure stone age people were strictly carnivore. They probably couldn't afford to be choosy.
