Teenage DD is exhausted from. Constant cough.

Hit me with all your tips.

P.S it's only been a few days but we're all exhausted from being ill over the festive period!

We've tried cough bottles
Cold & flu tablets
Fizzy drink

DD9 has this! I’ve been giving her milk and cough medicine (you’d think it was poison) but nothing working.

It’s wearing her out, bless her. And us

ChocoChocoLatte · 08/01/2024 21:36

Ooft it's not easy is it. Luckily she's 15 so can at least be reasoned with.......

@DancingintheSpoonlight I'm sure you already know this, but I was always told that dairy products are really not the best when you have a cough, as it can produce more mucus. A little is fine though of course x

Cocodomol is a cough suppressant. When I'm really struggling it's the only thing that helps. I also drink lots of tea with honey.

ChocoChocoLatte · 09/01/2024 18:29

I'm not sure that wouldn't wipe her out completely @Geraldneedsasecondclassstamp but if we don't get some sleep soon it might be a case of needs must.......... I've bought some VICKS to rub on her feet. It worked as a baby so hopefully it'll work as a teen lol

She's not had any dairy today.

Vicks on the feet, hot honey and lemon, warm squash to sip. My DS had this cough before, over and after Christmas, seems to be over it now with just the odd cough.

If I'm really sick with it I'll take some in the day and have a much needed nap. And then again before bed so that I can get to sleep

Warm drinks, not cold
Honey and lemon drink, or ginger and honey
Humidifier in the bedroom
Pineapple juice

TheCosyRain · 09/01/2024 19:56

Dark chocolate to coat the throat

ChocoChocoLatte · 09/01/2024 20:03

She doesn't drink tea and turned her nose up at warm squash after trying it by merely wetting her lips.......

Am afraid my nursing skills are lacking because if she won't even TRY remedies then she doesn't get to complain.

She's missed an event tonight that I've paid £35 for too & can't be refunded. Doesn't sound like much but this close to Christmas it's a little bit stingy!

Also steam might help. Hot shower or bath or some olbas oil in a bowl with boiling water.

Co-codamol 30 minutes before bed, it will relax her muscles and ease the coughing. She should also sleep propped up. Sleep is really the best medicine so anything you can do to help that us a bonus.

Gosh - here too. DD2 17 and mocks this week! 3 weeks now. Was given antibiotics last Friday afternoon and will take the last one tomorrow morning.

She was still coughing this week but feeling better but has just woken up again unable to breathe. This happened twice over Xmas but hadn't happened for a while. She coughing up mucus but it's just pale yellow. So scary for her and she's exhausted too.

She's such a fit, healthy girl usually, it's really knocked her for six.

She's currently steaming over the sink as that helped before but the doctor we saw last week says it's fallen out of favour and they now don't suggest!

Am unconvinced by vicks on the feet!

Get a humidifier from Amazon, I find that's really helpful especially at night. £20 or so, put water in the chamber and switch it on. Really simple and effective. Need to clean it out thoroughly every 3 days or so - I spray a bit of disinfectant in mine and rinse it through.

You can also put olbas oil in them

SeaToSki · 12/01/2024 02:28

If its interfering with sleep over several nights and its not coughing to clear gunk out of the lungs, you can get prescription cough suppressants to take over night that are very effective …but then you would have to be able to get an appointment with a GP!

Nitesaredrawinin · 12/01/2024 07:23

Easier to buy Rocking Horse Poo than see a dr

user1471557598 · 12/01/2024 07:49

Night nurse might help as it’s got a good cough suppressant in its ingredients. Only available from a chemist tho but is v effective!
