Does a wheezy/high pitched cough need a GP?

Ever since I had COVID around 2 years ago I have found that whenever I get colds they go more to my chest and I get a high pitched wheezing noise when coughing.

I've currently got a nasty virus and have this high pitched wheezing noise whenever I cough, my chest doesn't feel tight or heavy but my throat feels very itchy/irritated.

Do I need to see a GP for this or is it a normal part of having a cold? I can't find much information online apart from to do asthma or young babies.

I don't have asthma, and I don't smoke and am otherwise healthy and in my 20s

Maybe you've developed asthma. DH developed it last year after finally catching covid. It's an autoimmune condition so there's no reason for you to not develop it later in life.

I'd go to your gp if I were you.

Is it like a croup cough?

I’m don’t think the sound of the cough matters. It’s how ill you are that’s important.

Sounds like you might have developed asthma - I did after having Covid. I’d ask for an appointment with your practice’s asthma nurse, if they have one.

if you start coughing up green/brown gunk, you may have developed a chest infection - it’s more likely to happen if you have asthma.

Ever since I had covid the first time I've noticed that I sometimes get a bit of a temperature and my chest burns just like it did with the first covid infection. I don't know what it is and I have never treated it. It's definitely a thing though. It's not asthma with me. It's just a weird lung burn. It doesn't cause me a problem.

Would this be the only sign of asthma - a wheezing cough when I have a cold or virus?

It's not a croup sounding cough, and I can't find any examples on Youtube that sound like it. It's a dry cough but quite high pitched and whistling/wheezy. I don't wheeze when I breath, only when I cough.

No advice but I have been the same since I had a rotten cold (not Covid) end of November. Had a chest infection before Christmas with wheezing/crackling chest and now the cough is back with a vengeance and my chest is also wheezing.

ColleenDonaghy · 08/01/2024 21:54

Yes worth getting checked out, you may well have asthma now. Never fuck around with breathing issues, which includes wheezing.

illll · 08/01/2024 21:55

Ok I will message GP in the morning.

Sorry I don't know much about asthma, but I thought wheezing was when you make the high pitched noise when breathing? My breathing is silent, it's only when coughing - does that still warrant checking?

Yes, these were my only symptoms and now I have an inhaler for when I get a cold.
