Can’t get car insurance for 18 year old son - anyone else having this issue?

DS18 passed his test a year ago and has been driving his own car since then.

All year he has been insured with a black box. Has had no issues with his driving, no convictions, penalties etc and drives well.

However, his insurance is up for renewal and his current insurer has said he doesn’t meet their criteria and therefore can not insure him this year.

We are now struggling to find an insurer. We’ve tried a few comparison sites and they are quoting ridiculous amounts, at least £400 per month (currently paying £180 per month). Other companies we have called are repeating the same, that he doesn’t meet the criteria etc.
I’ve just called my insurer, Direct Line to see about getting him on my insurance but again he doesn’t meet the criteria, the guy I spoke to at Direct Line has said it’s because the insurance will be way more than the value of the car and it’s not worth them insuring him.

What on earth can he do? He is a very careful, competent driver and has had no issues with the black box. He drives a 16 year old, 1.4ltr Fiesta which has had no modifications etc. It’s book value is only £800.

He has just been offered an apprenticeship in an industry he has wanted to get into all year and needs his car to get to and from work (it’s 30 miles away and not on a public transport route). I don’t know what we can do.

Can anyone recommend any insurance companies that we may have missed?

The insurance was perfectly valid, after all, they paid out when It was crunched on my gatepost.
I doubt they would have paid out for the repair if it hadn't have been valid.

Risky strategy for a few quid.

Were you and your dc prepared to lie to investigators and in court if needed?

If it’s just because the value of the car is low then perhaps just go for 3rd party?

Cookerhood · 11/08/2024 07:40

Third party is often no cheaper for some reason.

Actually I'm not surprised, a few people have said this. A few of my friends are struggling, despite managing for their previous dc.

Like others have said they seem to not want the youth market anymore.

Plus everyone I know their insurance has gone up dramatically this year. DH was furious with it, when it doubled even despite trying every comparison site and direct line and everyone, he still couldn't get it down. He was not happy.

My son just passed his test got quotes from a comparison site quoting at around 2 to 3 thousand for a 1 litre peugeot... cut a long story short.. they then shot up to 5 thousand and now they won't even quote or he doesn't meet the requirements. He has no motoring convictions of any nature. Any ideas? At my wits end as I've paid a non refundable deposit.

Its worth finding an insurance broker and asking them to take a look. We couldn't get anything everyone just said they wouldn't quote. The insurance broker was able to find out it was a combination of age (17), apprenticeship in motor industry and our postcode. We couldn't fix any of them but they did manage to find us someone who would take him on £5000 a year with a black box. Luckily he can afford it due to being in a high paid apprentice and still living at home. God knows how those still in full time education or having to support themselves are meant to manage.

Have you tried moving the start date to a couple of weeks away. We found a couple that would quite via comparison sites but not directly.
Was the quotes not saved? Usually you have so long to go back in and make the purchase.
