Has anyone done The Crystal Maze Experience?

Thinking of it for DD's birthday.

Just a bit put off by the bit that says unless you book in a group of 8, they don't guarantee that you will play together. There will only be 3 of us.

Any past experiences?

We went as a group of about eight people. The (foreign) friends who hadn't seen it before were a little confused, so I'd recommend rewatching the original series.

It's not as 'sophisticated' as the series. The puzzles are challenging, but 'worn'. I presume you're going to the one in Piccadilly Circus?

The aim is to gather as many crystals as possible for the money dome at the end, which again, is slightly worn and many of the notes are crumpled, in order to beat the high scores of others who have competed.

I'd probably give it a 6/10. I actually rate more of the escape rooms higher.

Went with dd and friends - think there were 4 of us and we went round as 4 so got 2 goes each in each area! Was great fun (yes a bit tired but once you get into the spirit of it was brilliant)

I went to the Manchester one in a big group of adults for a 40th. Some of the fun for us was the nostalgia of the tv show, which wouldn't be there for the kids. The games are good though and you get a guide going round with you who's in character and gets the atmosphere going. We did end up with a couple added to one of our groups who didn't know us which was fine but I would try to make sure I took 8 people if I went again, so my group was just "us" which is more relaxed.

I’ve done it several times, I love it so! I was the extra added to someone else’s group, which was ok: I still felt involved, and they were happy to have me. I took care not to give anything away though. Once I was in a group with only three of us, which was good, because we all got lots of games.

It is massive fun. I liked the physical games best. It is quite hot inside, even in winter, so wear layers. It’s best if you wear trainers.

if you want to guarantee not having outsiders, you have to pay for all 8 people, so it depends how important this is to you.

I've been to the London one, I really enjoyed it (though am old enough to remember the original series). We had a group of 8 - I think it would be a bit awkward to join with strangers, a lot of the fun is seeing your friends do the tasks.

We did the Manchester one and had a fab time. It’s really good fun!

Also, how old is your DD? With some of the physical games, they have to be age 13 or older. And do watch the Richard O’Brien episodes on YouTube with your DD.

I agree with some of the puzzles feeling “worn”, but they’re all great the first time.

I did it with friends in a group of 4 and they put us with another group of 4, which was fine and everyone got two games. The other group was a family group with two teenagers, which was great as they were much better at the physical games than us!

GreatAuntMaude · 07/01/2024 12:03

I have done Manchester too.
The puzzles vary immensely in complexity. I got a whole "escape room" to solve in 2 mins!

It's good fun.

Thanks all, we will give it a go. Would be the Manchester one that we do.

I don't mind being put in a group with others but the way I read it was that unless there was 8 of you, you may be split up and the 3 of us would want to remain in a group together.
