Help me get up in the morning to do yoga.

I’m generally awake anyway and I need to do yoga as it helps with my back pain but my bed is cosy and I don’t enjoy yoga. I think I just need to do it. Does anyone have any tips or ideas to make it easier?

Does it have to be in the morning?

I actually enjoy yoga but have never managed to do it first thing. I like to do it just before bed.

I also think you need to start enjoying it first. How do you do your yoga? Do you just do some moves, a set routine, do a YouTube video, etc?

Join the 30 days of yoga thread on the Yoga topic and do the new Flow series with Adriene on YouTube.
Don’t do it first thing in the morning. I actually do mine at about 5 after I’ve finished the days work and before I start making dinner.

Set up everything you need the night before, mat, water bottle, any other equipment, iPad etc so you're ready to go. Sometimes I will exercise in my pyjamas, especially if it's cold and I don't want to get undressed and put leggings on so if that makes it easier for you then go for it Smile

You tube videos only 20 mins. I have tried classes but I get so bored.

If I do mornings it also some how helps me make better food choices. I suspect if I waited until evening it would be too easy to not do it.

Thanks. I will definitely be more prepared.

I'm the same so I'm going to start yoga in bed, there are videos on you tube.
Hope you find one to suit.
Let us know how you get on.

My husband already says it’s like sharing a bed with a wrestler when I toss and turn during the night. I’ve booked some classes instead because I just wasn’t doing yoga at home.

Try pilates instead?

I do yoga, but I don't recommend Adrienne, I find her very annoying.

I would not enjoy doing it in the morning. I'd be clocking watching, thinking of everything I have to do to get everyone out of the house and to school and then work. I love yoga most when my mind is on the right place and I switch off. So I second trying it in the evening. Once I've cleared up from tea, got sandwiches made for the following day, I give myself a hour of silence and really treasure it. I find I can only really relax in to it when I know there's nothing else to do after except have a shower and get in to bed and relax.

Would putting some relaxing music on while you do it maybe make it a bit more enjoyable?

Read 'Atomic Habits' by James Clear. I tried for 20 years to have a daily practice and failed. Since reading this book I do yoga and meditation every morning. Complete game changer.

Hmm. I once read half of it and gave up. Seems I lack staying power for everything. For now I’m doing one class a week and in September when I have more space in my life I will increase it then.

I live Adrien, but there are others. I get up and put YouTube on straight away. She has at least three series on there now (Move, Flow, and ... ?) plus specific classes for e.g hips. 20 mins or so. She always starts slowly and it's a great feeling to go from being sleepy in bed to sitting eyes closed on a mat before stretching etc. So I get it out of the way and can then enjoy my breakfast. But another reason I love it us that I don't have to drive to a draughty hall on a Tuesday night for two hours and pay a fortune for the privilege. Just get into the habit, like cleaning your teeth. No one is making you do it so it's always your choice. I've been doing 15 or 20 mins a day now for about 12 years. If I didn't do it my back would seize up. If you don't like Adrien, there's eg. Charlie Follows, who does it on a beach, and hearing the sea is wonderful. Good luck!

Leave the mat and the outfit out , leave your phone in the bathroom and have the alarm on there so your up, out of bed and walking about anyway - easier to go to the yoga mat from there than from a cozy bed! And harder to get out of bed when you can scroll!

I've just done an Adriene bedtime yoga because I know my back will thank me for it in the morning.

Gentle twists and stretches and deep breathing. Also calms my brain down for bed meaning a better night's sleep generally.
