DS and height

DS (7) is VERY tall for his age, however myself and DH aren’t exactly short -I’m 5’6 and DH is 6’1. DH dad is even taller, his DSIS and her two DCs are very tall.

However DS (9) is not tall. He’s pretty much tracked along 50th centile for height in last couple of years. I’m a bit over people always commenting on how they DCs are almost an equal height and asking if they’re twins.

Is it possible DC9 have a growth spurt and still be really tall? Or is the “chart” what he’ll follow for life? Would love to hear about your own DCs!

Try being my DS (12) who is tiny for his age and his 9 year old sister is catching him up rapidly.

My DS was best friends with a not very tall boy all through school.

When he was about 16 he shot up and topped out about 6ft 2 I’d say. It’s not at all uncommon for boys to have a massive growth spurt in their mid teens.

My brother-in-law is 6ft something and has a son that's tracking along the second centile, which surprised everyone. But his mum found his baby chart and he was the same before a series of ridiculous growth spurts.

I think Michael Jordan had late growth spurts too - I remember a documentary about him and he was cut from a team at one point for being too short.

My DS was the shortest all through school including all the girls. He is now over 6 feet and is still growing. He is 19. I followed a similar growth pattern to get to 5'8.

Take a look at how you got to 5'6 and your DH to 6'1.. you might be there now but it could have taken a while.

I hear you. I'm a bit over people commenting on DS2's lack of height compared to his brothers. I'm 5'7" and DH is 6'3". DS1 and DS2 have stopped growing and are 6'4"and 5'10" respectively. DS3 is only 12 but is already taller than I am and I would guess will end up around 6'4" also.

He may or may not end up a similar height to his brother. My friend has three DDs, all adults now. Two of them are 5'5 and the other is 6'1.

I know 3 sisters where as adults the eldest and youngest are 5ft10+ whilst the youngest is 5ft2. All close in age and nothing different about the middle ones diet or anything! Genetics are weird sometimes. But with boys you can’t predict teenage growth spurts so their height pre puberty isn’t necessarily a predictor of anything.

Xiaoxiong · 07/01/2024 07:33

This is exactly the same for my 2 sons - DS1 has tracked 50th centile his whole life and is 12, DS2 is 99.9th centile at 10 and has been his whole life. And DH and I are your heights!

I'm not worried. It's likely that DS2 will always be taller but I know so many boys who are tiny and then shoot up in year 9/10.

I am and was always tall (6'1 by the time I was 14, peaked at 6'3). My brother (1 year younger than me) was always pretty average until about 16, then grew about 6 inches in 18 (over college years) and ended up at 6'5! There's time. Girls tend to get their height sooner but stop growing around the start of puberty, boys get their growth on towards the end.
