Someone crashed into me

Someone crashed into the back of my car whilst we were all in stationary traffic. I had a call whilst I was still driving home afterwards from a company called Aftercare who stated they had been passed the incident by the drivers insurance company (go skippy). They're going to call back tomorrow morning rather than talk to me whilst I was driving, but I have received this text from them too:
We are sorry to hear you have been involved in an accident with our mutual client. We would like to help with any damage caused to save you claiming with your insurers, paying an excess and we will also supply a replacement vehicle to suit your needs - Please contact us to discuss your claim further on 01618149329.

Is this a real thing?? Seems far too good to be true....

Contact your own insurer first.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 06/01/2024 20:53

Always contact your own insurer to report an accident. That’s what they’re there for. Anyone telling you otherwise is dubious. Ask them about it.

Thehardestthingaboutwritinganoveliswritingit · 06/01/2024 20:56

It’s an accident management company don’t do it always contact your own insurance. Take advice from them first.

Travis1 · 06/01/2024 21:02

Always go via your own insurers. I hope you took lots of photos and info at the scene

Salesarefullofcutpricesprouts · 06/01/2024 21:04

Ime you never deal with anyone but your own insurer.. Make it a life lesson.
Imo.
Never ever.

xyz111 · 06/01/2024 21:04

Yes will report to my insurance anyway. Took lots of photos. It's so frustrating as we were in stationary traffic and he didn't just bump into us, he really smashed into us. Luckily my ds6 found it funny rather than be upset!!

This. Do not engage with them unless you’ve spoken to your own insurer first.

xyz111 · 06/01/2024 21:05

Just frustrating as our insurance will go up when it's not even our fault!!

Do not accept any blame. I was hit head on. Driver wrong side of the road country lane.. He has ignored my insurance company for 6 months. Being taken to court now. When it is sorted my increased insurance will return to normal cost I am told...

Brackhurst · 06/01/2024 21:20

A lot of car insurance has gone up this last year so it may have been inevitable anyway.

As PPs said, phone it in to your own insurers and let them do the legwork. Do not engage with this other company whatsoever.

We were in your position last year and this was also the advice of our insurer (we’d have ignored ‘random’ company contact anyway).

Unfortunately we’re also in a similar position to@Salesarefullofcutpricesprouts now as the liable driver’s insurers are also dragging their heels, so ours have sent the solicitors in. Annoying as it’s more paperwork for everyone, including us, but such is life sometimes.

Glad you’re at least ok and hope the claim is straightforward 💐

PS don’t forget to get child car seats replaced asap. Insurers should reimburse the full tab.

BIossomtoes · 06/01/2024 21:21

Don’t go near it. Your insurance may well not go up, it wasn’t your fault and your no claims won’t be affected.

apapuchi · 06/01/2024 21:35

Wasn't there a thread on here recently by someone who had availed of a service like this (they 'took care of it', provided a hire car etc) and then they ended up with a huge bill for the courtesy car? I'll try to find it and see if the circumstances are actually similar.

I'd do things the old school way, report to your insurance and let them negotiate things for you. It is gutting if it will mean you lose no claims and/or it causes a price increase but definitely better the devil you know here I think. Hope you're all OK.

OhpoorMe · 06/01/2024 21:37

If you're not at fault your insurance doesn't necessarily go up, as your insurer won't have to pay out

Sadly that isnt accurate

As someone who has been in an accident your risk goes up (as opposed to someone who has never been in an accident)

Someone smashed into the back of me at a roundabout- has cost me over £1000 in increased premiums since (my premium was very very low before). Admiral explained at length that although it was not my fault I went from someone who had never been in an accident for 30 years to someone who had been in a recent accident- so my risk increased and the premium increased. It went up all 4 cars on which I was a named driver.

It also took 18 months to settle - the claims company Admiral allocated were crap and I finally refused to deal with them and did it myself. I could have had a hire car at £1000s a week but refused as I didn't need one and so I got the bare minimum to cover my expenses getting home (accident was 200 miles from home) and the cost of the repair. They tried to argue about a £10 taxi to the train station.

apapuchi · 06/01/2024 21:39

I can't link it as I'm useless but this was what I was thinking of. Not the same situation as the poster accidentally contacted them rather than the bona fire insurance company, but enough similarities to be wary. Thread title: Misled by credit hire company after accident

xyz111 · 06/01/2024 22:18

I've contacted my insurance and won't answer the phone tomorrow by that other company!! So would Go Skippy have told them about it? Does that company then deal with me "cheaper" than if go skippy dealt with my insurance company directly? I'm not going to deal with them, but wondered how it worked.

hedgehoglurker · 06/01/2024 22:36

We notified our insurers after being rear-ended by third party. Then went through the third party insurer's directly for the claim, as they got in touch. I don't think it was a separate company though.

Our car was written off and they paid us more than we'd paid for it, provided a courtesy car, paid for replacement child car seats, etc.

It worked out well for us, but it was dealing with their insurer's directly, not a separate company.

SinnerBoy · 06/01/2024 22:42

Third companies take a piece of whatever payout you'll eventually be awarded.

You're probably going to be deluged with calls from solicitors and claims companies, speaking from bitter experience! Just go through your own insurance, it's what they're for.

Someone ran into the back of me in 2019 and it took 3 years to sort out, as he turned out to be uninsured. They wrote the car off and gave us a courtesy car for two months and took it back, when they realised he was uninsured. (He was driving on a trade plate and we guessed that his employer didn't want to pay).

Sadly, your premiums will go up, it's rubbish, but it's just the way it is.

TwoBlueFish · 06/01/2024 22:47

I had the same thing when someone drove into the back of me. Lots of messages and letters trying to get me to deal only with them. I went via my own insurance who supplied a hire car and arranged the repairs. I’ve now got to go to court as the other insurance company are still disputing the cost of both the repairs and hire car (18 months later). So annoying when none of it was my fault.

Mintyt · 07/01/2024 07:17

The reason they have contacted you it the person who hit you (TP) had admitted fault, it's perfectly legal of them and they want to keep their costs down with getting you repaired quickly to keep you in hire as short as possible, big profits are made in claims. Your insurance can take a bit longer have you car stored for a day or too more and they make money but you don't miss out. As long as you have told your insurance your fine and can let the TP insurance deal with the claim

Leonie86 · 12/11/2024 20:33

Hello, I’ve just had this same thing happen this evening and I felt abit uneasy. Did you go through them or with your own insurance?
