Would you take on another job to pay for an extension?

My partner and I both work full time. We would like to do some work to the house (25k worth) part can be done on interest free finance and would cost me £300 a month, the rest DP would take out a loan to cover the cost.

I need to keep my part time job in order to afford the monthly intrest free finance of 300 pm

While I certainly don't want to do this forever I'm happy enough to do this for 3 years to get our home looking nice. DP is starting to think it isn't worth it.

For context the house really REALLY needs this work done.

What's the wise people of mumset thoughts?

I wouldn't do another job on top of a full time job to pay for it, no.

Pammela2 · 06/01/2024 18:03

Do you have a full time job too? If so, I can see why it could cause some contention. Equally only you can decide if it’s worth it.
Can the work be done in stages? I’m assuming it’s not a crazy amount because it’s relatively low cost in terms of construction cost.

jackstini · 06/01/2024 18:04

When you say 'really' needs the work done - why?

Is it cosmetic?
Replacing out of date kitchen or bathroom?
Extra room needed for dc/granny annexe?

3 years is not that long if it would massively increase your quality of life

Depends what "really needs doing" means. I'm having to take on a second job just to make ends meet, I wouldn't do it for something like an extension as I've done it before and it's exhausting.

Think new kitchen and bathroom mainly but it needs done as the house looks like shit.
I'm
Already doing the two jobs atm but if we hit the green light then I'm committed for 36 mths. DP could and will get bonus' etc so it may not end up being for as long

Yes new kitchen and bathroom. It's so so dated old and just looks crap. I feel we can't entertain people because I'm too embarrassed about the state of it

It wouldn’t be worth it for me personally. I value my time off work too much and am not that bothered about how my house looks. But if you think you can do it without getting too exhausted then go for it, everyone has different priorities.

Overthebow · 06/01/2024 18:13

So you’d be doing a second job, taking a loan and doing interest free finance to get this work done? To be honest it doesn’t sound like you can afford it. I wouldn’t be getting into debt and having to rely on a second job for it. A new kitchen and bathroom really isn’t essential.

BumbleNova · 06/01/2024 18:15

Honestly- I wouldn’t. Having just done a house refurb and put ourselves under sustainable but extra financial pressure I’m not sure on balance it is worth it. Can you do it in stages? As and when?

alternatively - if it’s awful, can you do a cheap /cheerful make over for less? DIY some of it.

Landlubber2019 · 06/01/2024 18:22

No, I think you are overcommitting yourself financially.

It's not something I would consider.

Landlubber2019 · 06/01/2024 18:24

£25k for an extension is really cheap! What are you considering?

CharmedCult · 06/01/2024 18:24

I'm confused. Do you work full time or part time?

Who owns the house, did you put an equal deposit down? Are you tenants in common or joint tenants on the deeds?

frozendaisy · 06/01/2024 18:27

We took out extra mortgage, but it was when it was low interest, put savings and bonuses into our extension (but more at £90k), best thing we did. It was that or move.

If you are going to stay where you are and £25k makes it what you want it's cheaper than moving and an investment in your life.

stayathomer · 06/01/2024 18:29

My friend got an extension done for same reason and now, with it done (and looking amazing) all she talks about is how they spent so much money on it and could still have savings etc etc. so totally could go either way

jollygreenpea · 06/01/2024 18:32

Do you have 2 part time jobs and need to take on a 3rd to fund this?
If so where is the time going to come from to do the 3rd job?

Do you need to extend or just renovate the kitchen and bathroom?

QuestionableMouse · 06/01/2024 18:35

I think you'd be mad.

sallyballymcfaa · 06/01/2024 18:40

I have full time job AND 12 hr job. The 12 hr job is just rainy day money atm

OP posts:
AppleKatie · 06/01/2024 18:41

It depends how draining the second job is- and what it is. If you have a 37.5 hour a week and not a second more day job with a short commute you could prob do two evening shifts a week in a pub without too much hardship. If your first job already has you working 50-60 hour weeks not so much..
