Changing trains at Newport, South Wales

I'm travelling from Portsmouth to Chester and changing at Newport. Is 7 minutes enough? The next possibility is 1 hour 7 minutes.

Do you have any accessibility or mobility issues?

NotDoinNuffin · 06/01/2024 12:14

It's not a big station, so should be fine assuming you're ok with stairs?

Yes it is as long as your train is on time.

I don't have mobility issues per se, I am 80, fit and active but I will have a wheely case and as @mumonthehill says - my train might be late. I think I will go for the longer wait, or I'll be watching the time neurotically.

Why? If you miss the second train because the first one was late arriving you can just get the later train anyway.

It's all about how you buy the tickets. The cheapest way is to buy tickets for the whole journey which can only be used for a specific train. So yes, I could go for the more expensive option which allows you to travel on any train that day. I have to juggle price vs convenience. But I have the answer now, thanks, Newport is a small station so the worst thing that could happen is having to cross the tracks upstairs downstairs and miss the connection. More research needed and it's not till April so I have plenty of time. Thanks for all your responses.

I'm going to make the assumption that your train from Portsmouth will come via Bristol so you'll probably arrive at platform 2 and your train north to Chester will go from platform 3. They are directly opposite each other and there are no stairs or corridors to navigate between the two. As long as there are no delays you would be ok in 5 mins.

I once managed to make that connection in less than 30 seconds in that station. I was suppose to have a 40 min change but delays getting in. Watching my connecting train pull in at the same time as the train I was on pulled in and managed to jump across to catch it.

There could still be works going on at Newport and there was scaffolding up on the platforms last time I went through around November time which made the platforms a bit narrower and busier than usual.
