Anyone taken Oxytetracycline for sinusitis?

I get many sinus infections per year. I've been referred to ENT.

I've had a cold since before Xmas which then turned into a sinus infection.

I was on amoxicillin for 3 days then lost the rest of the medication on the bus this evening, stupid I know. For some reason I have some Oxytetracycline unused, it says it's for a broad range of bacteria but doesn't mention for sinusitis. I can't bear the thought of not being on any antibiotics for the weekend as I'll be back to square one by Monday.

Would you take the Oxytetracycline?

I didn’t know they still used tetracycline. As a very ill child, I had a lot. It can discolour your teeth and leave you with life long sensitive gums.

Oxytetracycline not tetracycline.

Have a look at the. NICE guidelines and see if it recommended. What was it originally prescribed for?

No I'm not sure how to do that. I'll have a Google though unless you can point me in the right direction

Sorry I didn't read your comment properly.

It was originally prescribed for my husband's chest.

No I wouldn't use random drugs, unless it was something very common and well known to me like penicillin. However - I also suffer with my sinuses. Every time I get a cold it leads to weeks of my nose being so swollen I can't breathe and pressure headaches. Steroid nasal sprays have been a game changer. Prescription at first until I realised the medication is the same as the generic allergy nasal sprays that you can buys cheaper than the prescription price.

cherrypickles · 05/01/2024 21:43

I had a look and it isn't recommended for sinusitis on the NICE guidelines - I will post a link but it's weird PDF

www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng79/resources/visual-summary-pdf-4656316717

But I'm not medical. I probably wouldn't take them.

If it that bad after three days I'd call 111 and say it's not got better after 3 days. (Don't say you lost them)and they will give you the second line choice.

It should have started to pick up by now.

@cherrypickles thanks so much for that! I won't take it.

@legalseagull I've been prescribed dymista nasal spray which I've been on daily for almost two months now. Can't say they have made any noticeabke difference.

I just hope that I can get my bag back tomorrow morning. Unlikely though.

Good luck getting your bag back OP.

I'm sure this isn't a cut and dried list and there are other antibiotics that will
Work, but it is supposed to be best practice.

Sounds like a challenging week.

I really struggle with sinusitis too and it drains the life from you Flowers

No one has handed it in yet. So that's that, if anyone was going to hand it in they would have done it already.

I guess the infection will get worse between now and Monday. I find it so ridiculous that GPs aren't open over the weekend or even just a Saturday.

You should to ring 111 and they will help you although it could be a lengthy process waiting for a call back.

If you can bear the thought of not having antibiotics it suggests they weren't working and you need an alternative

But anything NHS seems to be a tortuous process right now.
