How much for a light fitting to be fitted

I've be quoted £55 by an odd job man!

This seems rather a lot for one light fitting in a newish build?

Is this the going rate?

Thats perfectly reasonable for someone who’s self employed and had all the overheads that entails

Journeytosober · 05/01/2024 14:57

I’d say that would probably be an hourly rate. Even though it’s just one fitting, he still has to get to you, do the job and then travel back. Assuming you need it to be wired ? It sounds reasonable to me but get an alternative quote if you think it’s high.

Sounds about right

I usually save up any non urgent jobs for plumbers and electricians - it's cheaper to get all the niggly little things done in one visit. Obviously you have to have them out in an emergency though.

How urgent is it? Could you wait for an emergency and then get it done.

NotSuchASmugMarriedAnymore · 05/01/2024 15:04

One more thing. Is he an odd job man or is he an electrician? Because I would expect an odd job man to be cheaper than an electrician but I wouldn't ask an odd job man to do any electrical work if that makes sense.

dontgobaconmyheart · 05/01/2024 15:07

That would be cheaper than i've ever been quoted for the same. The quotes vary a bit bit are typically 70/80, but from dedicated electricians/reputable larger local companies so all being relative it seems in line.

LIZS · 05/01/2024 15:09

Probably the minimum rate, first hour of labour.

lunarodgers · 05/01/2024 15:44

I had an odd job man do mine, £25/hour - had 3 new light fittings to be done.

He ended up here a bit longer as I actually also needed the ceiling fitting changed, etc, so I think £55 is ok.

reasonable

Good idea I might get a few things done at once. I need a few lights changing.

No it odd job man who is a carpenter by trade but does general building works too. A light fitting can be changed by a competent Diyer.

I might as the electrician who lives in my street, but I tend to be quite private a home and don't get involved won't he group chat etc!
