Fainted or seizure?

I woke up about 2am, felt a slight pressure in back passage, not pain, for a few seconds. Then I started to get hot, and next thing I'd a weird sensation in my head, really scary, heart racing. I thought I need to take off my top, so remember sitting on the edge of bed to do this and then about 20 mins later I woke up lying on the floor, I'd wet myself and pool of urine on the carpet under me.

I got such a fright I called the ambulance. Thankfully all vitals were okay, but if I wanted they'd take me to hospital, but I said I was happy not to go, once they'd checked me. They suggested either wind/gas from bowel could have caused this; or a seizure. Because I live alone I don't know what really happened, but it's really scared me.

I was cold and shivering afterwards, that's lessened now but still there. I've never had such a weird sensation before. I'm never sick.

Has anyone any ideas?

A feint. You can lose control of your bladder/bowel during it.

Thanks. I just wasn't sure if it's normal to urinate after fainting.

Seizure. Or if a faint it’s a red flag that you didn’t come round immediately. You need checking and I’m amazed they didn’t take you in.

I would presume seizure from that description, think you should def get checked out today. Sorry OP sounds terrifying, hope you feel better soon

Yes, it can be.

Fraaahnces · 05/01/2024 07:37

I assume seizure too. Maybe get an Apple Watch or a wearable device to monitor what happens.

A Vasovagal episode isn’t uncommon to happen when going to the toilet to move bowels- so the fact you felt that pressure first sounds likely that it could be this. It’s pretty much a faint. Just a dramatic one.

Ostryga · 05/01/2024 07:40

It does sound like a bit like seizure, I have temporal lobe epilepsy which present as focal, but they sometimes lead on to tonic clonics. Mine present differently to how yours came about, but epilepsy is very specific to the individual person.

Did you bite your tongue? Do you have any muscle pain? Those are classic signs of a tonic clonic as your muscles are tightening/relaxing constantly and you generally bite your tongue very hard.

I would ask for a referral to neuro asap,

I fainted once and I was aware of the feeling of things getting darker. I didn't lose control of bladder or bowels. There wasn't any complicated cause. I'd get checked though.

This has happened to my DH twice. He got up with a pain in back passage and went to the loo in the night. He fell off the loo and I found him all clammy on the landing. I was about to call 999 when he came round and was fine within a few minutes. Happened about a year later too. I looked it up and also in here there are several threads about it. It’s something to do with the vagus nerve I think .

43ontherocksporfavor · 05/01/2024 07:44

Ah I see @fourelementary has it.

OneFrenchEgg · 05/01/2024 07:50

Nothing in that link mentions wetting yourself, and it says to see a doctor if you get palpitations.
My son faints a lot (so much so it's on all his NHS letters under the diagnoses section)
I would get him checked if he wet himself during a faint. The fact you don't know exactly what happened in those 20 minutes and you live alone would make me want to get checked

Daniagainagainagain · 05/01/2024 08:10

20 minutes is a long time to faint.

I've suffered with seizures and faints due to a heart condition. When I faint I also twitch and roll my eyes so it can look like a seizure, but a typical faint won't last 20 minutes.

Onthefloor4 · 05/01/2024 08:22

Thanks, all. I haven't been able to sleep since. I'm going to ring my doctor when they open at 8.30. It's really scared me. They said my blood pressure and heart was fine and all other checks, so they felt unless I wanted to go to hospital, there was no need, but they couldn't tell if it was a seizure and/or if it would happen again.

So I attended my GP yesterday. He was very concerned, especially about the urination. He gave me a letter to go to emergency department. I'd some bloods done which showed a slight infection but doc doesn't know where and prescribed antibiotics. ECG was fine. I've to have MRI on Monday.

Wondering today if I overreacted and should have just left it, but both my GP and emergency doc think I'm right to be concerned.

You're right to be concerned. Seizures can have multiple causes and it's important to find out why you collapsed.

As476 · 06/01/2024 09:24

Hi, did they check for a urine infection? When I have a uti this happened to me.

Onthefloor4 · 06/01/2024 10:43

Well, they checked urine and bloods. As I mentioned above, bloods showed slight infection but location unknown.
