London- Southwark Station area a good base?

Losing the will to live trying to plan a family weekend in London. We are looking at the premier inn near Southwark Station as a base...is that a good base location? Any other recommendations very welcome!

I really like the canary wharf premier inn. It's right by a dlr station.
And walking distance from the docklands museum.

Is that the one v close to Waterloo station as well? I would say it’s a great spot, you’re not only close to the river and the Southbank, you can pop on the Jubilee line for Tower Bridge, the Tower of London and HMS Belfast, and it’s an easy walk in the other direction to Covent Garden.

I used to stay in that one regularly for work - it’s fairly new and really quiet but still well located. Some lovely restaurants within 5 mins walk too, on The Cut.

Short walk to Waterloo, lovely walks along embankment (both sides), easy to walk across the river and into Oxford Street / Soho etc.

Depends what you want to do / see really. But I would say yes, good location (and tends to be cheaper too).

PS. If you do stay there make sure you ask for a room not in the basement or ground floor. Higher rooms are very quiet and away from the street. I once had a room on ground level and opened my curtains stark naked to find a group of builders outside on the pavement 😂

id say it’s as good as anywhere. It’s on the jubilee line which is good for getting to the west end. It’s also walking distance to a lot if stuff on the southbank. You can walk to London Bridge (although also in the jubilee line) for Borough market and Shad Thames / Tower Bridge. Where are you coming in from? Works very well for arriving into waterloo obviously. What are you planning to do? Anything specific in the diary?

Southwark is fine. You can walk to Waterloo for more transport options and to the south bank and Borough.

Yes! Just stayed in the premier inn next to borough and the Anchor pub.

I work near there. That Premier Inn is certainly very popular. I’d say it’s a pretty good location. Round the corner from Tate Modern and close to the river. As mentioned above lots of restaurants nearby too.

moderationincludingmoderation · 04/01/2024 21:17

It's a great spot. The southbank, tare modern, borough market etc are all on your doorstep.
A short hop or few tube stops from most other interesting places but not too touristy either.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 04/01/2024 21:20

Yes it's a few minutes walk from where I work. Very well located.

You could also consider the Premier Inn at Blackfriars but it is probably a bit more expensive. I have stayed at that one.

FoodieToo · 04/01/2024 21:40

We always stay in the Tate Modern Premier Inn when we are coming to London from Dublin ! Love it !
It's a great base and you can walk to most central places from there .
Heading there tomorrow when we see Moulin Rouge , very excited !

FoodieToo · 04/01/2024 21:47

Actually I think there are 3 PI in the district .

yoshiblue · 04/01/2024 22:05

We've stayed there it's really good. From memory you are near a road with Tesco Express, Costa, lots of restaurants both on that road and near the Tate (eg Wagamamas). Close to Waterloo for transport and also the London Eye/Clipper service.

It's a perfect spot TBH.

amicissimma · 04/01/2024 22:12

It's an interesting and historical area. Take a few moments for a stroll down Roupell Street and Whittlesey Street while you're there. The Graffiti tunnel in Leake Street is worth a look for older DC.

TwittersXgf · 04/01/2024 22:19

Live locally, I'd say there is plenty to see around here

stringbean · 04/01/2024 22:23

Yes, stayed there several times - great location. A short walk from Waterloo, choice of restaurants/bars close by, plenty of buses if you prefer that to the tube, easy walk to South Bank or across to Covent Garden - I love the area. Going there in a couple of weeks actually!

Notfastjustfurious · 04/01/2024 22:24

Stayed there in October and it was really easy to get around from there. Train from Luton Airport to Blackfriars, 10 minutes to the hotel. Tube station on your doorstep to anywhere. There's also a Nandos close by for easy kid friendly food. I'm looking to go back this year.

Givemestrengthorvodka · 04/01/2024 23:03

Thanks all, sounds like a good option although i have just spotted there is one right at Westminster Bridge as well which seems to be even closer to the hot spot areas. We only have 48hrs there with a 10 and 8 Yr old so keen to be on the doorstep of things and walk as much as possible. Going to war museum, British museum and sondheim theatre across the 2 days plus hoping to do an open top bus tour or the likes.

I work near Southwark tube so I am an expert on places you can reach with half an hours walk or less (so I can get there and back at lunch time). They include : Tate Modern, The Globe, Imperial War Museum, St Paul’s (just), Borough Market, South Bank Centre. Easy to get tube anywhere as well, I nipped up to Regent Street and back in my lunch hour the other day.
