Iron supplement

Does anyone take a higher dose iron supplement?
I've been having some issues with my periods and the dr did a blood test. It came back with low iron levels and the dr advised I take a regular shop bought iron supplement. I told her I already take a multivitamin with iron and she basically said ok no need for anything else.
But surely if my iron levels were low enough for her to recommend a supplement, I need something stronger if I'm already taking one? The appointment was only a phone one and I wasn't able to ask her really.

Is there a good iron supplement that might help more? I've had very low iron before and been on prescription tablets, and have started having 10 day heavy periods which prompted the blood test, but I guess my levels are now just above the point where they'd prescribe something.

I tend to take them around dinner time because I don't generally have dairy with dinner. I could maybe do mid afternoon with a glass of orange juice instead though.
I don't drink tea or coffee so that doesn't have an impact.

What dose do you currently take?

DD was borderline anaemic and we’ve been giving here these which seem to have worked, as in she’s less tired.

We put DD on iron supplements as her periods are quite heavy and she often is tired.

Most multivitamins have a lower iron content, we find that pure iron like Feroglobin is better. For example Wellteen has 100% NRV, Feroglobin has 121%.

Maybe swap for a while and see if that improves, taking it with pure orange juice also helps. If you still have issues, I would ask for another check and a prescription strength supplement.

I take a liquid iron with added b vitamins as the tablets disagree with my stomach. Foods like chickpeas, legumes and dried apricots are really high in iron and very easy to get a couple of servings of these in a day.

Ferrous fumerate from chemists. Take with vitamin c

whatever you take it is important how you take it. Vitamin C increases absorption and caffeine reduces it. So no point in iron supplements if you are then also having loads of coffee

The spatone apple flavour with vitamin c are almost palatable and didn't seem to give me horrible side effects that some others did. Just follow the instructions so you don't cancel out the benefits by having a cup of tea at the same time.
They did increase my ferritin levels but I also started eating a lot healthier at the same time.
