Anyone know about tax codes please?

Hello

I need to give the tax office details of my new company lease car.*
I also need to tell them my PAYE Code.
Is this the same as what's shown on my payslip as "Tax Reference Code"? This has the format xxx/xxxxx

(There is nothing on my payslip called PAYE code)

Thank you

*I appreciate that I am extremely fortunate, but I do drive around 1000 business miles a month.

No, the xxx/xxxx will be the code for your employer.

This is a standard tax code:

1257L

So it will be three or four numbers followed by a letter.

The tax office will already know your tax code, they will have given it to you in the first place. I presume (but don't know, I'm self employed) that a PAYE code is different?

HMRC will have given your employer your PAYE code. Once you submit details of your company car they will then change it.

The tax office reference is the code which tells HMRC which tax district your employer is located in folowed by a unique company reference. That is the xxx/xxxxx one

If you fill in a self assessment then you will also have a UTR (unique reference number) for yourself.

The PAYE code is the bit in the format xxx/xxxxx

It is the number that the employer and HMRC use to identify you, between themselves.

(it identifies the company car against that specific employment, if you had more than one job)

My employer has told me I need to reference it when I update the car details.

My payslip gives two numbers

Tax reference: xxx/xxxxxx format
Tax code:123B format

I've put both in my letter!

I think it's just for cross referencing. They know this info!

In my experience (I work in payroll) HMRC can take months to update company car details when it's done by letter. I'd advise you to to set up a personal online tax account and do it that way instead (or phone if you can get through)
