Is there anything I can do about these trees?

I live next to a field which has a row of massive trees. The trees are very close to my house and I'm scared they will fall on it. Is there anything I can do about it?
I really don't think it's safe.

Get a tree survey, hopefully will give you peace of mind

AlwaysGinPlease · 03/01/2024 19:39

It's the roots you need to worry about. Definitely get a survey done.

AnxiousPangolin · 03/01/2024 19:43

Who owns the land the trees are on? Are the trees dead or is it just that you see them waving in the wind and think they must be dangerous?

If you know who owns the land, contact them to discuss your concerns first. If you don’t know who owns it, use the land registry to get the owner’s details.

AtLeastHalfRelieved · 03/01/2024 19:44

What makes you think the trees are dangerous?

AnxiousPangolin · 03/01/2024 19:48

Also, you don’t need to get a tree survey as these can be expensive. A reputable tree surgeon will be able to tell you if there is any imminent danger from the trees.

A lot of people get anxious about mature trees moving in the wind and think they’re about to fall over but that’s most often not the case.

What makes you think the trees are dangerous?

I just see them waving in the wind and panic. If they fell on the house it would be game over. I've just read a news story about someone killed by a falling tree which has made my worry worse.

Trees are meant to wave in the wind. If they didn’t, they’d fall over.

zigzag716746zigzag · 03/01/2024 20:33

It’s the waving in the wind that makes them stronger. Bows tend to break more from brittle trees, that don’t wave.

NahHumBrag · 03/01/2024 20:33

We’d all be dead without the trees.

As the PP said, they are supposed to wave about.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 03/01/2024 20:55

Hi op I have the same thing as well a big row of very tall trees and close to my house and they belong to conservation but luckily the previous owner we bought the house from planted evergreen trees along the boundary and they have grown tall and helps the biggest trees less scary. To be honest it’s scary but I have lived here 9 years and the trees are still standing and none as fallen down except the ones inside the field. I’m not scarying you but a tree fell down just seconds away from my car when driving on the main road and another tree fell yesterday on the same road and same place like the other tree but the tree’s next to my house are still standing so don’t be afraid.

Why did you buy the house? Or are you in social housing and had no choice?

GlassRoses · 03/01/2024 22:19

I don't own the house. It's rented.

So move if you don't like the surroundings.

You can't just expect apparently healthy trees to be cut down to manage your anxiety!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 04/01/2024 07:53

Wouldn’t it be better to move than try to get rid of the trees?

Are you generally an anxious person?

AlisonDonut · 04/01/2024 07:54

Gonna need some idea of the tree type, the height, the distance from your house etc.

ArchetypalBusyMum · 04/01/2024 07:58

We've had some big storms in last couple of years. If they've come through that they must be in good shape.
Second the suggestion of consulting a tree surgeon if your worries are plaguing you, but the trees may well outlive you, so you shouldn't just say 'how high' when your worries say 'jump', a better reaction is to collect accurate information and be guided by that.

pd339 · 04/01/2024 08:01

You can learn not to be irrationally scared about trees waving in the wind (which is what they are supposed to do)

GenXisthebest · 04/01/2024 08:02

We have tall trees at the end of the garden and our neighbour fusses about them. We're not prepared to cut down good healthy trees for no reason, but we do get a tree surgeon to inspect them every year to make sure they are not rotten and remove any risky branches.

ArchetypalBusyMum · 04/01/2024 08:12

It is normal for it to cross your mind that trees can fall over by the way. I have a similar set up at home and I occasionally wonder when the tree will fall, especially if there is fierce weather. But I had a tree surgeon take a look and the risk is very low.
Also where I am took the brunt of storm Arwen which was especially damaging because it came from an unusual direction and trees grow in response to normal conditions, so are strongest when pushed from the usual direction. The fact my trees survived that when many others didn't is reassuring.

If you don't like the trees, you'll have to move.

This. People need to stop destroying things! If they're "massive", they've clearly been there for a long time and are doing ok ...

itsmyp4rty · 04/01/2024 08:43

We have a huge tree in our back garden, it's important that they move otherwise the wind would slam into them and they'd be more at danger of falling. Now the leaves have gone we can see an exposed birds nest high up, in front our upstairs window. The nest has stayed perfectly intact through all the storms and 40/50 mile an hour winds, it's quite amazing.

WandaWonder · 04/01/2024 08:57

So the trees grew suddenly since you moved in?

ArchetypalBusyMum · 04/01/2024 09:29

Don't know why people need to put unconstructive caustic replies.
If someone does have worries these won't just make them magically disappear.
Helping someone come around to a different take on things it's better done by meeting them where they are and showing a different path.
So throwing a barb over is just stinging for stinging's sake.
I know it's the internet people, but you don't have to.

GlassRoses · 04/01/2024 10:21

I can't just move house!

I'm going to try find out who owns them today and make sure they're being checked as they should.
